Hello to All,
I have been trolling around for little while. All of the information is great and I will post pics soon. (Trust me...) Thanks to all who have helped me thus far.
Question as I am trying to wrap this project up. I don't want to break anything so can anyone tell me how to remove the breather on the final drive of an '85 CB700. Does it pull out or is it threaded?
Thanks.

Hi nystyle and Where are you located? I'm guessing NY state by your name. I'm not 100% sure about that final drive breather I will have to check my manual to see...I'll post back if someone doesn't post back with the answer first. Looking forward to those pics

Hey gammer. You are a true maven sir and I can only hope to do you proud. I would post the pics now but don't want to ruin the final WOW!
Thank you for the quick response and I look forward to the answer.

Well I checked in the manual under the "Lubrication" section and in the "Final Drive" section. The micro fiche shows that the cap comes off, but I can't find any indication if its screwed on or not? My guess is that it is screwed on...but not 100% sure?...sorry.

I was under the impression that it was pressed on. I haven't looked into it at all, but if it were threaded, there would be a way to get it on/off with a wrench, or screwdriver I would think. The fact that ther isn't leads me to think that it's a pressed on part. Maybe try heating it up and tapping on it lightly with a hammer or something. Why are you wanting to remove the breather cap anyway? Just curious. Oh yea, !

I'm trying to figure this out for my 84 650 as well... the breather cap that is on it is simply sticking out the top of the final drive with the little breather hole pointing forward... I ordered what I thought was the cover to go over it but the oem part that I received was an actual breather cap and does not fit over the piece that currently resides in its place.
Dying to take the vice grips to it but do not want to cause any damage...

Sorry Style, I had to set the bike project on hold for a while. tinkering a little bit today for the first time in a month. To answer your question though, I have not figured this out. The OEM unit has not threads/clips, etc., and so thin that I can't imagine it must be pressed on. Once I get this bike permanently on the road I hope to do some weekend traveling and will sooner or later come across someone that sees it, laughs and exclaims, "well here's your problem!"... haha

Hi all:
I’ve been lurking here for a few weeks after acquiring my “new to me” 1985 Nighthawk 650sc from a rather neglectful PO (yeah, I’m picking-up the lingo). I’ve fallen deeply in love with the bike even though my only ride on it was a 1-mile round-trip to the carwash right after I got it home. When I was 18-19 years-old, my first, and only, transportation was a 1979 Suzuki GS550. Somewhere in my 20th year, I sold it and haven’t had a motorcycle since. I’m 38 now and I figure I was past-due.
Anyway , I found this thread because I was trying to figure-out how the breather cap is attached. Mine just popped-off during my second marathon cleaning spree. I’ve been tempted to just put a dab of glue on top of the breather and stick it back on, but I dunno.
I know you guys (and girls) love pictures and I took a bunch of “before” shots and a video. The bike deep into restoration territory and I intend to make a post of it's own when its done, but for now but I’ll give you a sneak-peek. Here it is minutes after it was unloaded from the truck into my driveway:

to the forum Bhendron! I still have not figured this thing out. wish mine would pop off so I could see how it attaches. Can you post pic of yours, since it is removed? I'm beginning to believe it just presses into the top of the drive but not quite sure enough to attempt replacement.

Well here are some pics. It seems that its my cap that is off. The actual breather is likely a press fitting, but I don't know that for sure. Hope the pics help.

Hey guys, sorry for not answering sooner I have been working on another project and had not checked the NH forum lately. You are correct that the breather is press fit and the cap actually has a collar that fits over the breather. Yours probably broke off when cleaning. i remember this because I used a rubber mallot (lightly tapping) to get the cap on. I was going to replace the breather, but all was fine functionally and did not want to tinker too much. I guess you could glue, but if I remember correctly the part (cap) was only about $10 at the dealer. Although they may have to order you can ride safely until it comes in. Be sure not to be like me and order the cap and the breather and confirm you are ordering just the cap. It has its own part number.

Thanks for the pics bhendron!
I'm gonna try to get the cap on mine tomorrow. That is actually what I purchased. Currently mine looks identical to the last pic you posted...
