Ok i have an 85 honda nighthawk.  The bike has always ran great.  Well one day when im out riding the bike just suddenly loses power and stalls.  well after sitting for about five minutes it starts up again and runs fine no problem.  over a period of a month this problem has gradually gotten worse.  It would bog down and then pick back up as i would be riding it.  Now the bike wont idle right and it is bogging down the whole time the bike is started.  if i have it in nuetral i can rev it all the way up but when its in gear  I have to keep on the throttle just to keep it running.  when im riding it, i can pull open the throttle all the way and it slowly picks up speed maybe topping out at 50mph (way under performance).  ever since this happened a loud clicking noise is coming from the engine (incredibly loud and awful sounding).  someone said it could be the TPS?  but i dont know if it even has one of those or where its located.  Could it be the carbs?  i dont wanna fix anything thats not broken.  oh and it has new spark plugs so thats not the problem.

Sounds like it could be a fuel problem?  Check you petcock, fuel line, and cap.  While you're at it, check your air filter.

Anyone else have other suggestions?

Also, could be something with your carbs.  I'm curious what everyone else things too.

Starving for fuel. Try a half can of Seafoam in a full tank. Run that for a few miles, if it still acts up then top off with the remaining SF, run a bit and let it sit for a few days. Let us know.

Starving for fuel.

I agree.

Also check your vacuum line going to the petcock. If it has a leak, it may not be letting enough fuel flow. Happened to me once.

Clicking noise sounds like internal engine issues. Lifter, cam chain, hard to tell from the description. One man's tick is another man's knock.

A common cause of temporary fuel starvation is a restricted fuel strainer inside the tank,  You have to remove the pet cock to get to it.  The bike will run out of gas when the tank is low and when consuming more gas like going up a long hill.

Dirty carburetors are more consistant problem.

Running an engine when a lean air fuel mixture exists can cause overheating and internal engine damage.  There are a dozen different possible things that could have been damaged and are now ticking.

Im going the complete opposite way and say you might need to check your ignition coils. You say it stalled when it got hot, you let it sit and cool and it was fine again till it got too hot? And it will seriously bog down if all plugs arent firing.

But who knows, just check for spark and you'll know.

try the seafoam thing and then get back to us.  that will set you back ~$9 with no downtime.  After that, I think it may be time to look at the carbs because it really sounds like a fuel delievery issue to me.

good luck!

This is probably a dead thread. The O.P. was here on June 26th and hasn't been back.

magpieman21, if you see this please let us know how it worked out or if you still need assistance.
