I am leaving tomorrow for a trip to the Coast, I just got back from a ride in the high desert, where the bike really gave me some problems. I cannot seem to get any power out of my bike at all. It will start and idle just fine but with any acceleration it starts to shudder real bad and just will not climb any higher than 5500 - 6000 RPMs, I just barely can get it over 55 MPH. I attributed the poor performance in the desert to elevation, I was at 8000 - 10,000 most of the trip, but last time at elevations of 8000, it gave me no problems. puzzled

My first thought is spark, maybe fouled plugs and that will be my first thing to check, right now I am running DPR8EA-9, I am wondering if I should go with the DPR9EA-9.

I trailered the bike to the desert and it did get bounced around in the back a bit, and on start up I got some blue smoke, which is not normal, I usually get no smoke at start up.

Any ideas? I have to be on the road at 8AM tomorrow morning and could use any suggestions, thanks.

Are all 4 pipes hot?

Also, you might want to move this to the 'Crisis Room' for a faster response.

How does it run at low elevation?
Any more clues for us?
Check the quick stuff first, hoses around the carburetors, plug wires, carburetor clamps, air filter,

Just a warning, running a bike out of tune like this for any exteneded length of time could lead to overheating damage.

It runs as bad at sea level as it did at high elevation. It ran perfect up until 4 days ago when I got to the high desert. I had trouble starting it, but it did fire and ran, but no power, feels like you are toggling the on/off switch under acceleration.

Brett - all 4 pipes are hot, so there is no one cylinder that seems to not be firing.

I am going to remove the tank and check the coil/plug wires, and for any loose connections as well as checking the plugs.

Bad Boy- I am not going to be riding anywhere in the shape it's in now.

shog :shog:Well, I'm embarrassed to say I found the problem. Just before I left for the desert I was cleaning the bike and found a rag I had left under the seat, it was blocking the air intake.

Removed it and amazingly it runs just like it did before. Luckily it ran so bad I could not ride it anywhere. My ODO reads 9 miles, just enough to let me know it was running like crap.

Thanks for the input, sorry for the false alarm, but I was worried that something was seriously wrong. Looks like the cool climate of the coast is again my destination.

Wow  knary aren't you glad it was such a simple fix?  It's always easy for us to assume the worst thing is wrong and not check how tight the nut connecting the seat to the handlebars is!  giggle
