This is my first motorcycle, although I've been riding a QLink Axon50 50cc scooter around campus for about two years.  Got this so I can commute to the office and back when I work late nights, which has previously been a pain due to my wife and I carpooling.

It's been 'loved' by only one other owner, who bought it new in 1982.  Runs, but has minor issues.  Dents, bad rattlecan paint job, missing exhaust stud (so it spits oil - awesome for keeping my right shoe lubricated), and a sketchy front turn signal rewire that makes the headlight work only most of the time.  Perfect fun project for tinkering on cheaply and running around campus at 25mph.

Sounds like you got a good riding project.  I love when my project cars roll.

Hi all, new to the forum. This one looks better than the one I picked up last Friday. PO had laid it down at 45 mph. After patching 3 holes in the gas tank, I took it for a 250 mile beat for my buddy's bachelor party. Aside from the stuck carb float and no left turn signals, it ran great. Looking forward to learning a lot.

Every time I see a 450, it makes me want one even more. Have fun with it.

That looks better than mine (ok,ok my son's) when I first got it. We had a good time fixing it up. I'm sure you will enjoy tinkering on it.

That 450 is perfectly suited for commuting, and if you can embrace the essense of what motorcycle camping was always supposed to be, it can do that beautifully as well.
Have fun learning!

Welcome to the group Davecmu and Skunkpaw.  I've never ridden a 450 and I don't remember ever seeing one in person.  Hope you enjoy your bikes.

 welcome
I also picked up a 450 earlier this spring.  Probably in slightly (very slightly) better condition than the one you have pictured.  I've gone on the highway over a dozen times now and have easily kept up with the traffic doing 60mph.  Recently I had an issue with the ignition switch, but after coming on here I received some help and ordered a new part before noon the same day.

From your picture, the tires look pretty good.  I just got a new pair and will have a mechanic put them on later this week.

Thanks, everyone!  The bike runs about a good as she looks right now, and I'm trying to sort out some 450 carb issues, so feel free to visit my other thread:

http://nighthawk-forums.com/index.php?topic=6303.msg80502

I think a white paintjob is in order (visibility without gaudiness), and probably a black hi-temp on the mufflers once I get the running issues sorted.  They're in pretty rusty shape, so I'll probably sand them up (80 - 120 - 220 - 400 - 600 - 800 - 1k - 2k) when I replace the exhaust stud later this month.

Camping with the 450?  Not until I get a rack, but that's quite a ways off at this point.  I think I'll stick to my 1971 Shasta 15' trailer, another of the restoration projects currently underway.   winker

I live in Tuscaloosa, AL currently, working at UA.  My wife and I are both from Grand Rapids, MI, and our families still live there, so we get up to that neck of the woods pretty regularly, too.
