OK here is the deal, I haven't done anything to troubleshoot this yet so i'm not 100% sure what is wrong. On my way to work this morning I stopped for some breakfast and when I returned and got on my bike to start it, the starter button stuck on, the button itself popped back out but the starter stayed engaged for a long time until it finally started. I rode the rest of the way to work and when I shut off the bike the starter engaged again and stayed on. I was finally able to get it to go off by tapping the start button a few times. After work when trying to start it, I  turned on the key and got nothing on the instrument cluster, no lights no gear or neutral indicator, fiddled with the key and finally got it to start. Has anyone else had this or similar problems before, or can anyone give me a place to start. BTW it's an 83 CB650SC. Thanks for any help in advance.

welcome to the forum!  It sounds to me like you are having some sticking / contact issues in the starter switch.  I reccomend taking the right hand controls apart and cleaning the internals.  You also should protect the contacts with dielectric grease.

Until you get this ironed out you may want to keep the side cover off so you have access to the battery. A starter turning over and over like that for more than 10 seconds at a time is burning up the starter motor, and those things are pricey.

The starter motor should only be engaged for ten seconds or less at a time, and allowed a couple minutes to cool off before trying again.

I had something like that happen recently on my CB700SC and it turned out to be the wiring connector for the ignition switch.

It might also be some debris has collected around the starter button to make it stick... maybe a spilled coke or something else sticky?  All it takes is a couple of drops.  You could try shooting some WD-40 at the crevices around the button to see if that keeps it from sticking...

Be sure and let us know what you find...

Update. I have done almost nothing other than wiggling some wires and turning the bars back and forth to try and find a binding situation and it's working fine now. puzzled The only thing I have noticed is that when I turn full lock to the right (sometimes have to do this while baking into my garage) it seems to either pull the choke cable or throttle cable cause the engine revs. Can someone post a pic of the proper routing of the throttle cables and choke cable around the front of the frame.
