I recently discovered I like chewing gum while I ride. Why? I dunno. Maybe I don't clench my teeth as much or when doing a curve get a rhythm or at least a placebo against anxiety. Keeps me from getting thirsty. The nighthawk doesn't vibrate much but maybe it dampens my jaw. Besides my mom always said I couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time. I can say I can ride and chew at the same time.
The only downside I can think of is swallowing it.
HA! I bet somebody posts that aint nuttin I chaw redman while cruising. I wear a full helmet so that is out of the question.

Loki smokes a pipe while riding and I've seen it...simutaneously one of the most confounding and coolest thing I've seen in a while. I also chew gum quite often when I ride, maybe not for any soothing effects or vibration dampening though. I think I just like gum. P.S. I also have been know to throw a dip in while riding with a full face helmet...think on that one!

Nope Ari the ramifications of that are just too horrible for me to meditate on. I refuse. Oh and I also just like gum too.

I can't chew with a helmet on. My temples get swore from being squeezed from the chewing. But, if it makes you feel any better...I am chewing gum right now...while I am typing

Don't chew gum, but I do put a Fireball in before before a long ride. Throat cancer and radiation killed most of the saliva glands. I can get over 2 hours out a fireball, and keeps my mouth just moist enough I don't have to stop and drink something every 30 minutes, like I do normally all day long.

I found this year that I like to chew gum while riding too. Most of the time I throw a stick in before my ride home from work. But I learned the hard way that forgetting your circumstances and blowing a bubble while wearing a FF helmet is a bad idea.

For long rides get a water bladder and put it in your tank bag. That way you have water right there to drink from. Dehydration is something to be avoided. When your riding you don't realize how much water your loosing because it evaporates off so quick. When you get dehydrated your judgment is impaired, your reflexes are slow and your not as focused as you should be on a bike. Gum helps fight the cotton mouth but isn't adding any water to the system. But yea. I usually keep some gum in the tank bag as well (for the cotton mouth ). Also one of those things that will keep you awake during long HWY burns. I also keep some beef jerky in the bag too. Bike snacks need to have some mass to them so they don't blow away when you open the bag (pre open the bag while stopped). A bag of Funyuns will fly away the second the bag is exposed to the wind. I don't constantly snack. Just when I'm getting drowsy and want to press on to the next gas stop. Then again I'll sometimes go gas stop to gas stop even with the fuel cell on (~300miles).

Loki smokes a pipe while riding and I've seen it...simutaneously one of the most confounding and coolest thing I've seen in a while. Now that's a neat trick. The airflow probably keeps the thing lit, which is often a challenge. I might try that someday, but the condition of roads might lead to some messiness. I think the ideal would be to have a water pipe, aka hookah, hooked up like a Camelbak. I wonder if there is already a patent out on a tank-mounted hookah.

The trick to smoking a pipe on the bike isn't keeping it lit. The wind will do that just fine. It's the fine line of keeping it lit without burning it out in seconds; that's the hard part. Best done when you can take your left hand of the bars to cup the bowl. Or just go slow enough that the wind is not an issue. With the flip face up I don't really like traveling at HWY speeds. Catches the chin bar and either tries to rip it back or slams it shut (not fun with a pipe hanging out of your mouth). A Sherlock is good for smoking with the chin bar down. The sharp curve keeps it from interfering with the chin bar. Just remember to keep the face shield up so the smoke has some place to go.
I like the hookah idea HC. I didn't see any patents pop up when I did a search on Google. So we need a water chamber that is leek proof, a bowl that covered and secure. I think the best part would be an automatic ignition system. Some kind of element that rest over the tobacco and is connected to the bike power. So with a click of a button this element gets hot (just match the heat that those coals put out). Hookahs need that constant heat because the tobacco is so wet.

So THIS is how those projects start -- you know, the ones that people take a picture of and then create a post on a web forum. Subject Line: WTF? My father-in-law used to be an avid pipe smoker and had a nice collection of pipes. One he called his 'In The Rain' pipe; it had a hinged cover that went over the top of the bowl, and the cover had small holes drilled into it. I bet something like that would work very well, for those crazy enough to try it.

No, but a strange habit of stopping at Baskin Robbins on the way home for pistacio nut ice cream has developed recently. I went through the drive-thru today. BTW, I can't figure how you can chew gum with a proper fitting helmet. You'd also be chewing the inside of your cheeks.

Yeah sometimes I bite my cheek, for me the secret is being careful and doing it with very small chews.
