I will update my other thread: http://nighthawk-forums.com/index.php/topic,6303.0.html in a second, but I have another question to ask.

Now that I'm running on both cylinders, I've had the occasion to put it into 6th gear.  Each time I've done so, regardless of speed (did it at 45mph the first time and have been able to repeat at 25mph and at a stop), the oil light comes on.  Scared me to death the first time, but after some experimentation last night, I've determined it happens any time I engage 6th gear.

Running Rotella T 15w40 and is properly filled.

Excuse my ignorance, in case this is normal, as I don't have an owner's manual (just a Clymer's on PDF), so I don't know if it's supposed to do that.  I know on some of the bigger bikes, there is an overdrive indicator light.  On mine, there are only the Oil, High Beam, Neutral, and turn signal lights.

Any thoughts?

Maybe your oil level is low and the low RPMs in 6th gear is causing low oil pressure?  scratcher

you do have an overdrive indicator light. Its blue and in the center between the turn signal indicators. Sounds like a previous owner may have messed with the harness and switched the connections. Get a clymers and check.

That's easy enough to test. Does the blue light come on when the key is turned on but the engine is not running?

JerJohn, you're right.  I never noticed because the OD etching is totally faded, but there certainly is a light there.  It doesn't light up at any time (ignition on, bike off), so I believe you might be right about the crossed up wiring.  Guess that means I also don't have a functioning oil light, so that makes this a "fix before drive" kind of deal for me.

Whoever owned this bike before me obviously didn't love it, as just about every mixed up thing has been wrong with it.  Let's not tell my wife, agreed?  She still thinks $500 was expensive enough, so I'm not about to tell her I need to trace down an electrical misconnection.   winker

I could be wrong about the wiring...my o.d. light works but it does not come on when I first turn the iginition key. Is your oil light lighting up when you turn on the ignition key? I believe the neutral light(if in neutral) the oil light, and the high beam light(if selected) should turn on with the key...

The Clymer's wiring diagram lists one for your bike. What colors are the wires coming from your neutral switch?

Clymer's manual has it listed for both years. But I trust a Clymer's manual to be accurate about as much as I trust a used car salesman to be honest.

My 1983 has an OD light, but I honestly can't remember if I've ever seen it lit up scratcher

Hard to see but it's directly above the ignition and in between the turn signals.  Going for a ride tomorrow and I'll make sure to get it in 6th to see if it lights up.

Mine works intermittently but it does come on occasionaly. Is it possible that the neutral/od switch works only at certain speeds? I know that sounds crazy but I have seen mine work. Or maybe we are all driveing around with bad Bulbs! ImaPoser
