When I started working on my wifes bike it had been sitting for nearly a year, for several months it would smoke, also I just couldnt ever get the carbs right, but we keep riding it. over time and miles, 500 or 600 miles, the engine compression went up, smoking went down and the I finally got the carbs right. So just start riding it, put some miles on it. Now it is just as reliable as my NH!
From the day I bought it I did oil changes at the 100 mi, 200 mi, 350 mi, 500mi, 1000mi, and the 2500mi points; I am now on a more normal oil change.

lol Scott you are just too much!
Yeah I'm just going to put the chain on it when it comes in (supposed to be tomorrow), and as soon as the title is in (should be any day now) just run around and see what it does.

That's good to know...there may be hope for this thing yet before the snow flies. Thanks!

Ok finally got the title/registration all taken care of and took it out for the "first ride" today! Of course I took it very easy, given the condition of the bike (having sat for so long) and that it has been a LONG time since I have been riding (amazing the difference in "feel" between the 250NH in bike class and this 650NH). With that said...when you tell it to go...it GOES! There is still a small amount of crap burning off of the engine exterior, and still a small amount from the exhaust, but both will go away eventually I'm sure. I ended up replacing the baffles in the aftermarket exhaust (looks like MAC maybe) that came with the bike (the baffles were removed and replaced with more steel wool pads than I could count! Oh well just have to at the crap some people do. ). Almost immediately there was much less exhaust smoke after swapping back to the MAC exhaust. I'm thinking maybe it was re-jetted for the aftermarket exhaust and in addition to who knows what burning inside the exhaust, that it was also running rich with the stock exhaust. I guess now I gotta go take some

I hear ya. I couldn't wait to get back on my 650 after putting around the MSF course all w/e on a 250.

Yeah those are two completely different animals for sure! Not just in power, but in how they turn...that one really threw me off a bit.
Took it out again this afternoon...no noticeable smoke from exhaust but there's still something burning off of the engine somewhere. Smoke coming up from under the tank area when I shut it off. Not a lot, but noticeable. Seems to be coming from the carb area oddly enough...probably still some "gunk" degreaser that didn't get rinsed off. That stuff stinks!

No not at all like oil. Honestly it kinda does smell like that "gunk" degreaser stuff.
Taking it out with a buddy that lives close by today. If its gonna burn off...it'll burn off today!

Status update...
Put on about 90 miles so far just putting around town, up to about 65 or so (damn Honda for not adding a 6th gear! lol ). Every time I take it out it just runs better and better, and stinks less and less. NO more smoke evident anywhere. Oh did have to fix one more thing...someone installed the front tire backwards!
Geucy is a happy camper!

Yippee!!! she has a name. Great name man. Well I was referring more to myself...ask Mary about that. But that works for the bike too! Just use the different spelling. LOL
