motoks,
You have yourself a serious beauty there!!  Are those highway pegs you have on there? I'd love to know where you picked those up 15 years ago, that is one thing I wish I had, that and a trailer!

Slick paint jobs on both those 750's.  Keep the rubber side down and shiny side up, and  welcome

Beautiful bikes both of them, I'm glad I bought one.  It's not as clean as these.  It's my first motorcycle, I'd like to log some miles and make sure I can "keep the shiny side up" before doing any restoration.

Way back when, I had an 81 750 Custom, in midnight Blue with light blue pin stripes.
It was a fine bike and that 750 was great put lots of miles on her.
I kept her all stock.

When I was looking for a Nighthawk I've always liked this year and style...Black with 4 into 4 pipes...so you can imagine my delight when the advertised 1985 Nighthawk...turned out to be this in the barn!

You guys certainly have good taste in bikes...lol!

 Sad

Waste of a pretty bike like that to cafe it. There are plenty of ugly older bikes around.

I thought the same thing as I headed out the door this evening to look at it. I was worried that it was too cherry to bother with for such an endeavor. However up close it is a little rough around the edges. Mechanically though it seems pretty solid. Guy did a some work to it recently, Valves and such, and also has a box of parts he bought that he did not need. I was also surprised, after reading some posts on this site that the K&N pods seam to work fine.

+1 , I could easily clean that bike up and turn it around for 2k in my area, but not if it's all cut up , they only made those for 2 years. Wonder what happened to the 4 into 4 exhaust.

BTW thanks for welcoming me to the forum.

Cutting up Nighthawks and trying to run pod filters are the two touchiest subjects on this forum, Welcome though.  welcome

I dont plan to cut too much mostly mod. I'll be keeping the side covers if that makes anyone feel better.I also think I may go ahead and buy a new air box. I am really torn on the pod situation. And am concerned that after I get things cleaned up and reassembled I'll have a devil of a time getting it back up and running. Bike will deff get fresh paint, not set on color scheme yet, and like I said slight mods. It won't be a traditional cafe as it will be a daily rider once the snow melts and I want something I can go the distance comfortably.

Take a look at the top of the carburetors in the pictures. There's your answer.

It has a 4-1 as I am sure you can tell. Sop far as the carbs go are these the ones that everyone talks about not working with pods? Figured you could probably tell from the photo as you all are Nighthawk savvy.

Have you ridden the bike? If you like the way it runs and it's not running too lean or rich you can just leave it like it is. Maybe the previous owner has it set-up correctly.

Hey Guys,

Been about a year since my first post. I've done a few things since then: new tires; wheel bearings; brakes and fork seals. The chain was rusty and the o-rings are dry-rotted but it is not worn so I'll just lube it more often to get some miles out of it. A new/different bar bag. [I use throw-over-the-seat saddlebags as needed.] Cleaned out the plugged front brake hoses with piano wire [brake fluid looked like wet brown sugar!] and rebuilt the front brake master cylinder. New fold-down highway pegs on the case guards [don't show up real well in this photo]. The old highway bars [in my 1st posted pic] are home-made [high carbon/high strength steel from a machine shop with Honda OEM rubber pegs]. I made them for my 1975 CB750K5 in 1978 and they fit behind and below the pipes on the '75. On the '82, the frame is wider and they would only fit above the pipes. Since this pic I have put them back on because they let me put my legs against the engine which is real nice in the winter! I got a slipstreamer-style windshield that I use for winter riding only. Same clutch. No engine work. The carbs have NOT been gone thru. It starts kinda' hard when it hasn't been run for several days but has never failed to start. I bought a slightly used 4 into 1 header w/muffler but prefer the 4 into 4s so I will keep 4 into 1 as a spare and use the 4 into 4s until they 'fall apart'.  I had to put a new generator rotor on it because it quit charging. Replaced the voltage regulator/rectifier just because.  I intend to go thru the carbs, check/adjust valves and a few other minor things as time and money permit. [My '750 mentor' says the engine sounds 'right' and does not need to have the valves adjusted.] She runs good and strong and I can't bear the thought of ever selling it. I bought a 2003 Honda Shadow Spirit [black and chrome] a few months ago for a 'stable mate' so now I have 2 bikes with totally different 'personalities' and I love them both.  The wife does not approve of 2 bikes, but that's just too bad. Guys, I feel like the richest man in the world! I have only 1 piece of advice for all of you: "Ride 'em if you got 'em!"
