When I got my 82 cb450sc nighthawk it had a dead battery, I just put a new one in it, and I know now why it was dead, the tail light never turns off. Is this a common problem? I know on Nissans I work on, if the switch goes bad it stays on. For now I just took the fuses out.

Probably a switch, there should be one on the front brake lever and one on the rear brake pedal. I'd check them both and look into replacing them.

Does yours have on of those ignition switches that allows you to leave the lights on for parking in the street?

Is the taillight on with the key in the OFF and LOCK position?  Because that would probably be an ignition switch issue.

Taillight should be on in the PARK position.  Supposedly other countries use this for something; here it just serves to drain batteries by mistake.

Typically that's a different circuit.

Most likely it's a case of the key set to P and not off or lock. If not, it's a short somewhere.

Yall were right, it was in lock position, in lock position on my bike it can be turned back slightly and it will make the tail like stay on, I could have sworn I put it in off and it stayed on, guess I was wrong, but I have it figured out now.

Thanks for the replys.
