The story of how/why I bought this is in another thread: http://nighthawk-forums.com/index.php/topic,6660.msg86311.html#msg86311

This thing was a mess...fuel leaks everywhere (just what I needed lol ), carbs were in terrible shape from sitting a long time, paint was just trashed, aftermarket exhaust stuffed FULL of steel wool pads (yeah I said "WHAT THE...?" also   Hap1 )

Anyway...today was the "first ride" since buying it, and "before" pictures just weren't even worth the effort...so here's some from today:

The paint is not the "good stuff", just parts store spray can.  I just wanted to see if I liked it all black, without the factory metallic paint and decal stripes...and to make sure that my dent-filling didn't look just horrible.  I definitely like the "all black" look, so it'll be repainted over the winter.

Bike looks nice.  I like the black color on it.

IIRC, the '82 had 4-4 exhaust.  Are those aftermarket slipons?

Glad to hear somone put some TLC into it.

Yeah it looks not bad for a "rattle can" (love that term! lol )...from a distance.  You can see where the poor paint quality shows up looking at it up close.  But for now...it'll do to get some cruising in before the snow flies!

Those are actually the original bolt/clip-on emblems.  The tank emblems were beat up pretty bad, so I bead blasted all the old paint off of them, painted with black engine paint, then sanded across the "raised" parts for the original black/silver look.  Can't really see them very good in those pics though...they're not perfect but not bad.  The side panel emblems are original.

Yes stock exhaust was 4-4.  That aftermarket was already on it.  I do have a stock exhaust here, not in the best shape, but went ahead and "fit" some baffles into these (why in the world someone would remove those is beyond me).  I thought maybe it had been jetted for the aftermarket exhaust, so went back to those (and yes I think it is a MAC system also).  It runs and sounds good, so I'll just leave it like that for now.  Kinda gives it a "later" look with the solid black and 4-2 exhaust.

Yeah I learned a long time ago that anything is more enjoyed when you do the work yourself!

Here's a better shot of a tank emblem...
