I need a new stator and regulator. I know they are expensive, but are they worth it? is there a good aftermarket one? Dennis Kirk doesnt sell the stator. Any help would be great. I have an 83 650NH.

This is where I purchased my stator and regulator rectifier from.  Procing was not bad, and they actualy sent me the right parts.

Caution, if your stator is bad then there's a good chance your reg/rec assembly is too (test to be sure).  There's a great ts'ing thread in the electrical board on this forum.

You can get your stator rewound or buy a new one.

New from Honda $250:
http://www.discounthondaparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=123816&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1983&fveh=2958

This one is a good price http://www.regulatorrectifier.com/catalog/1983-Honda-CB550SC-CB-550SC-Nighthawk-Stator
The 550 & 650 Nighthawks use the same stator.

Some local electrical / motor shops will rewind for less, but find out their warranty .

I would replace the R/R also.

I don't like the mounting on the Electrosoprt R/R., but they work.  I went will one that looked/mounted just like the old R/R.

I bought the R/R from Rick's  http://www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/results.php

Ride safely,

I would start with the rectifier.  I bought a used one to replace the one with a dead short that was on the bike when I bought it.  The used one fixed the short but it still wasn't charging.  I wound up buying a used alternator assembly from a fellow member here on the forum and he happened to throw in a couple used rectifiers.  Before I'd gotten a chance to replace the stator I decided on a whim to swap rectifiers once more with the best looking one I got from faithbiker to see if it made any difference.  To my amazement after riding 120 miles that day the bike still started just fine so I metered the battery when we got back and sure enough the battery still had 12.6V sitting and went up to 14.16 when I revved the bike up over 2500. claps

So before you spend $150 for a new stator, I'd start with the rectifier. I'm pretty sure my first used one wasn't allowing the necessary electrical flow to the stator to then be ramped up and sent back to the rectifier/regulator and on to the battery.
