Hey all,

Hoping to find anyone and everyone who's done a starter rebuild on an 83 NH 550 or 83-85 NH 650. The starter was giving me trouble while warm, i ordered a rebuild kit, replaced the brushes/holder and re-installed, armature and commutator ate the brushes within one or two hot starts (booo). After talking with a neighbor i noticed that there was play in my rear bushing, so i pulled and replaced. The Ebay rebuild kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330465366725&viewitem=&category=6755 uses bushing at both the rear and front (in lieu of the bearing). Would you guys recommend replacing the bearing (which feels fine) with the bushing? I also wouldn't mind some knowledge on removing the oil seal from the front end of the starter as well (not the o'ring on the outside, but the seal on the inside). My worry is spending another $27 bucks on a rebuild kit, and still not having the problem fixed, cause my next bet it to buy a new starter, i'm just having a hard time coughing over the 170 bucks to get one delivered to the doorstep. Hope some of you guys have opinions before i either spring for the rebuild kit again, or spring for the new unit, you're help is appreciated!!!!

Well, i took the starter up to an alternator/starter rebuild shop here in town. The guy looked at the armature, and specifically the commutator and basically said it doesn't look as though there's enough metal on the commutator for him to turn it easily without making to overly thin. So, he basically said "if you can get a new one, that's what i'd do". So i started poking my head around, hopped on eBay and saw a guy selling a NH exhaust here in St. Louis, e-mailed him about the exhaust, and asked if he had a starter too, sure enough he did. Purchased the new starter (and exhaust), cleaned her up, installed, and boom...good, easy starting hot or cold!!! The starter also spins much faster than the old starter i have, so all in all, i'm pretty happy with the starter setup.

I bought the exhaust because something had been burned onto mine, in his pictures it looked as though the exhaust had a couple dents under the pipes before the crossover, but i was disappointed when i saw one dent that didn't show up in pictures, on the outside of the left exhaust pipe  Cry luckily my pipe with the worst "burn on" is the outside of the right pipe, so it will be good for replacing that half. If i choose not to, it'll make a heck of a good exhaust for someone with really beat up or rusty pipes. If not, i'll use it if i choose to Bob the bike over the winter. All in all, just thought i'd mention what the fix to my numerous starter problems was.

Me too, took the bike out for a ride last night, and loved every minutes of it...Still have some minor issues with my ignition switch (if you push the headlight down, it'll turn the bike off). I removed, cleaned, and reassembled the switch, but it looks like it'll take a replacement to get rid of the problem. I'm also getting a little bit of smoke from the exhaust while running, the bike wasn't ridden regularly for the previous year and a half or so. So i'm hoping that after i start riding it on a normal basis that things will calm down some, seal up, and work better again...Time to let the bike do what it was designed to do, be ridden!
