Hi My bike just recently started leak oil out of the air filter casing on the left side under the seat.  I can't really figure out why and was wondering if that is a common problem and what the problem might be.  I figure it is some how getting blown into the casing but don't really know I can fix minor thing but am not a mechanical genius by any means. thanks! Also I just joined this forum and am excited about getting feed back.

Thanks again

Brian

Some blow-by is normal and should drain down the "gunk tube."

Those air boxes split and crack with age too.

Are we talking a lot of oil or a little?  Check for cracks in your air box and make sure the drain tube is connected and plugged at the end.  If you have cracks, it can be patched with high temp silicone, black if you can find it.

Welcome to the forums!  Would love to see some pics of your ride too!

When I got my 98 750 about 10 mos ago I discovered oil in the air filter also.  I cleaned up the area and put in a new filter (and did all the other maintenance items).  No oil now so my guess is that prior owner (PO) had probably overfilled the crankcase at some point...  Not saying that you did this but maybe that's all ...

I checked the box and it wasn't cracked.  The filter is saturated with oil but I bought a new one I originally had a 10w-30 and changed it to 10w-40 on the recommendation of my friend.  it was still leaking and I put the recommeded amount in from my Clymer manuel.  I put in a couple liters of 20w-50 as needed and the leak slowed down however it is still going.  My friend thinks it might be a gasket around one of the pistons that needs to be replaced.  Does that sound right?  Also it is a lesser problem now that I went to start my bike yesterday and nothing happened I checked the battery and it had about 11 volt charge and when the key is in it gets no power at all so if you have any suggestions for this problem I would appreicate it.
Also thanks for all your suggestions.

PS you wouldn't want to see a pic of my bike I crashed it in the Nouth Georgia mountains a year back and the tank is dented and the speedometer is broken off.

Hello and welcome! I agree that some oil making it into the airbox is a normal occurrence but I can't think what would be causing a large amount to build up. scratcher  If you aren't getting any kind of power when you turn the key on it could be either the ignition switch or a lose connection to the battery.
