For those of you who commute on your bikes, do you find yourself looking for alternate, longer, scenic routes on your drive home? For myself, when its this time of year and the weather is sunny, I like to look for more scenic rides home. It makes my ride more therapeutic In particular I have one route that is only about 5 - 10 mins longer, but it goes through some gorgeous countryside and has some great rolling hills and high speed curves. No too mention, it was just re-surfaced. So its as smooth as a baby's rear end

I wish I took the long way to/from school but 99% of the time I'm in a rush to get one place or the other.

+1 Don't commute very often, but when I do - fully agree! Plus the long way home usually has the added benefit of less traffic

Unfortunately, my ride to and from work is maybe 7-8 minutes so, finding a longer route home means riding for maybe 10 minutes. Not that I'm complaining...I did a rough estimate of how much I spent in gas going to work on my bike and since May, I have spent about $75.00 in gas to date just for commuting. The sad thing is...I have only driven my truck a handful of times this spring/summer and have spent more on gas in it than the bike.

I sure do. My main route home is mostly state highway the whole way. But I have a couple of 'safety valve' routes I've discovered over the years. These are the ways I take if there's a traffic backup, accident, or I just feel like a more leisurely ride home. Unfortunately, I haven't made use of them much the last month or so because I'm sorely in need of new tires. These roads are mostly narrow, twisty and tree-lined, so I will wait until I have installed (and broken in) my new rubbers.

A while back while working in a city I switched to reserve just before getting to the motorhome. The fuel station was a mere 4 miles away. A simple 8 mile round trip took 6 gallons and 5 hours. Crappy mileage and speed for a motorcycle. And the tank was on reserves again when I got home...sheesh.

Oddly, no. The bike makes even the dullest traffic more tolerable. If I had a short commute and left at a reasonable hour...but that hasn't happened in a while. I'm generally wanting to get home. Getting home happy is just a side benefit to getting home quick.

I thought I would save some money on gas when I first got my '86 and started riding it instead of my car, but the opposite is true. I keep finding myself taking detours because I start to feel sorry the ride is over when I'm closing in on my point of arrival. Not that I'm complaining. I just have to through in a few extra corners every time before I'm satisfied, I guess it really is an addiction..

I do about 50 miles round trip every day. I don't take scenic routes because suburbia just isn't that scenic. I will take a lengthly detour if traffic is backed up just to keep moving and enjoying my ride.

Not really, my 40+ mile (one way) commute is mostly 2 lane back roads anyway. 2 out of 3 alternate routes go thru the city and are for last option "the way is closed" detours.
