This past Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, Scotty13 took the short trip from Alexandria Bay, NY to Kingston, Ontario to meet gammer. We did some minor work on Scotty13's Hawk then took a scenic fall ride along Hwy 2 and the St. Lawrence river Parkway, back to the "Bridge to the U.S.Eh."


Scotty13's Blue '84 700s on the right and gammer's Red '85 750s on the left.

Scotty13's bike is back together. We just did the carb needle/washer mod and we're doing a carb sync in this photo. Not too much adjusting required.

WOW!  nice tech stuff. how thick are each of the washers needed ( in thousandths?)
          what has to be done to the carbs after this mod?   do you HAVE to modify air flow too?

Nice report!

That's great.  I've yet to see 2 'Hawks together.  Now if we could just get all 300 board members together...

My first thought was '300 members? No way.'  Then I checked and sure enough, that's about right.  We've got lurkers and everything.  This place has really taken off.

I rally have to give a big thanks to jeff <gammer> for helping me out soo much !!! He is a great guy and reallly knows his stuff!  yes it was pretty nice out thank goodness!   great day all in all , I learned alot!   it is too bad it would be reallly hard to get any great number of hawk riders together.... maybe some day though!

We used 1 x #4 washer under each needle. The instructions called for 2 per needle, but we wanted to try one and see how that worked. The only other carb work we did was the carb  sync...not necessary, but highly recommended after performing any carb work.

I've seen a couple of members on here from other parts of NY and Ontario. I think a regional get-together would be do-able next summer.  smiler

This mod won't fix any issues you are currently having with your carbs. I would recommend fixing your idling and cold start issues first, then apply this mod. All this mod does is make your bottom end and mid range a bit richer and you might notice better throttle response in those ranges. You do not have to make any air flow adjustments for this mod. The reason for doing this mod is because Honda has purposely jetted these bikes a tad on the lean side...probably for better emissions testing. It has been proven that you can adjust your carbs slightly richer (with the stock exhaust and air filter) and thus gain slight power improvements.

As for washer thickness...as long as you purchase #4 type washers, they will be the proper thickness.

p.s. if you are having cold start and idle issues, it sounds like you may need to get your carbs cleaned.

That's awesome to see riders get together because of the forum. That's what cool about these online communities, and it sure is a sign of growth for Nighthawk-Forums. No offense to Hondo, but I think this site will be way more successful than CBRider ever had a chance of becoming. Actually, it probably already is. Anyway, good report and I'm glad you could make it work.

Now maybe next summer we'll get a Michigan get-together. I like the idea of RTE's (Ride-To-Eat).

Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh...I have a tendency to be too "up front" about things.

Yeah, it probably would burn a bit more fuel, but I'm not sure it would be enough to notice. However, it would be neat to do a millage comparison before and after the mod.

I have def found that mileage on these bikes depends on riding style... when messing around with twisties and what not I get about 40  but on my drive up to school, cruising around 60 I got 49

gammer,       new gt501's installed today and air-fuel carb sync just for the hay of it.
                                 $200 at the dealer.....not bad i guess.



                             I used to bale hay and pitch crap in ontario for years.
                                          for some reason, i kinda miss it.

What's your opinion on doing the washer mod before ever running my bike (my newly acquired project)?

I've got my carbs rebuilt and about ready to install them in the bike. Would it be a mistake to do this before running the bike to see if there are any issues?

It would just be so simple to do now.

I would put the carbs on and try as is. Seeing since the mod is simple to do, and it can be done while the carbs are on the bike, then you can always try it later and see if you notice any difference.
