Sissy Bar for an 84 cb650sc

Hey all, Ive been on the hunt for a backrest/sissbar for my 84 cb650sc for a while and found a guy near that has a 83 650 and wants to sell me his sissy bar for $45..., However I cant seem to figure out if it will line up right, i have a picture attached that he sent,  are the bars universal during these years? I can only see 2 bolts on my frame that would attach the two nearest to the seat. not the third long pair .

That's definitely not a stock Hondaline sissybar but I think it should work. Here's a pic of my stock sissybar...



It looks like your front mount curls under the tail piece for both mounts rather than the stock one which also curls  under for the rear mount but goes behind the tail piece to the shock mount which is what the front mount attaches to.

In all honesty yours might be a heck of lot easier to mount than my stock one. I had a hell of a time getting mine back on.

Upon further inspection of your pic, I don't know what the hell the black bars underneath could possibly be for.   Maybe they go down to some foot pegs but that seems like total overkill.

I emailed the guy and he said he belived that it would attach at the bottem of the shocks so we will see...I'm going to check it out tomorrow and riding the bike there to see how it would like up so I dont get hosed

I guess I could see that bar going down to the bottom of the shock but as I said it seem like total overkill. That said it would probably hold up some saddle bags nicely.

To the bottom of the shock?  wouldn't that negate the swing arm travel?  Maybe to the top shock bolt?

That is an excellent point.  The front mount of the chrome part mounts to the top of the shock so if you bolted the black bar to the bottom of the shock that would really mess things up. Really if you have the sissy bar bolted to the top of the shock you wouldn't want it bolted to anywhere on th lower parts on the bike.

The black bars come off no problem and make it easier to mount, the guy said he attached saddlebags to em'. The black bars attach here on the picture where the yellow circle is on the frame. the others bolt with the top of the shocks and the back of the bike on the side of the seat...The leather though is in excellent shape the bar looks brand new and for a cheap price was a steal..., it does look like a pain though, im going to have to take the back fender off if I want to do it right  which is a pain. I also had to get a rebuilt starter recently that set me back 200 so we will se how much effort I want to put into this or if I might part with it myself

dang picture wont load, too big, but anyhow it attached to a bolt that is usually covered in a small chrome cap

Yeah I had to totaly remove the seat cowl assembly to get mine back on. Here's a tip, taking off the rear turn signals makes it a hell of lot easier.

Did yours also by chance attach to the top of the shocks as well?  I'm thinking that the black bars are overkill and make it extra hard to install and hard to avoid scratching other things on the bike. Anyone else got any other suggestions about putting a backrest on a bike? I guess im going to hit the shop manual and do the long haul tomorrow morning or something

How about finding a used grab rail and modifying it to become a backrest?  That way you still have the original in case things don't work out...
