Short Adventure to the Coast.

My neighbor calls me to see if we can go for a ride around 8:30 am.  I only have a few hours, as I had to work yesterday afternoon.  So I tell him to ride over and I'll think of something.  This is what I came up with.



We are going to ride to Intracoastal City and fish from a dead end bridge for a little while.  RWB is in charge of the tackle and the bait.



We get to the spot and start casting.  Nice view.



Some oil field hands are scraping and painting this Jack Up Rig.  The poles (spuds) can be lowered into the gulf floor, raising the barge so maintenance can be done on off shore platforms, rigs, etc.



We each hooked a nice flounder.



And I caught a decent redfish as well.



We gave the fish to a guy that was crabbing on the bridge.  You'd think we gave him $100.00 - he was so grateful.

being a fisherman myself, how do you attach your poles to your bike?

I just bungee'd them to the rear rack (that hondaline rack is unbelievably useful).





It worked, but IIRC, Hangster built a rod holder out of PVC pipe.  I'm going to look that thread up and make my own for the next journey.  Maybe I'll figure out how to pack a coleman stove and a filet knife, and we can have a shore lunch!!

Good fishin there Hppants (did a little fishin this weekend too , only 4 small mouth bass and 2 largemouth)....you have such a good fishery there it makes some wish for a trip there.....

Not from that spot.  You can see some coastal production operations though.  At the place I fished Friday, if you stand on a wier (control structure - about 4 feet above the water line, about 1 mile inland), on a good visibility day, you can see the first rigs about 2-3 miles off shore.

There is no appreciable drilling taking place within 20 miles of the shore line in Louisiana.  All of the oil reserves have already been tapped, and all of the drilling rigs that exist close to the shore are production operations - the field is already drilled, and the structures are for extracting, containing, and pumping or compressing the product through a pipeline to the coast.  The one exeption might be right out of the Mississippi River, where the water can get 2000 feet deep.

If one has a boat made to take a decent wave (unlike mine - I'm limited to in shore waterways), all of the rigs off shore make good fishing.  A shell pad (limestone, clam shell, etc.) is placed around every rig to give the Jack Up rigs and support boats a place to anchor or spud.  Over time, these pads make excellent artificial reefs for small critters.  And where there are small critters.....

you have such a good fishery there it makes some wish for a trip there.....

BTW seeing the pics of fish last night got me thinking this morning so i went to the creek and caught some Smallies , they don't grow rel big but they fight like animals

I've never caught a smallmouth bass, Hangster.  We just don't have any in LA.  I hear they make great sport fish on light tackle.

Drdubb - it's 1000 miles.  2 hard days or 3 easy days riding.  Pick up Tbante on day one and ya'll come on down.  Your bro-in-law in Slidell is a good 2 hours from me.  Regardless - it would be my pleasure to take you guys fishing and riding in Cajun country.

Understandably it is quite time consuming critiquing the neighbor's bike which leaves very little time for ones own....
