"Hang on lady, we going for a ride" - Short Round

As we are getting in to late October here in Southern Ontario, the temp at night has been dipping to the freezing mark and we've had some nice frost in the morning.
Anyway when I drove my 750s to work this morning the temp was around 35 degrees F. I plan to continue to drive it on sunny days until the snow comes. that could mean the temp will be well below freezing some mornings  biker_h4h1

I guess I'm wondering what temp other braves souls are driving there bikes at these days?

It just depends on how bad you want to ride I guess.  One spring a few years ago I rode into Kansas City, MO to have coffee with a fellow ADV rider and it was 25 degrees outside. Unfortunately he was not home and I didn't get any coffee.   Cry

When I bought this bike new I rode everyday that it wasn't going to rain or snow and I think the coldest day was around 17ish..  I worked outside so the temp wasn't really bothering me back then.. But I'm getting old now lol

It was 27F on Wednesday, 31 on Thursday and 44 this morning.

Need to buy a car to commute to work before the snow.

I will ride until the snow stays on the ground, it was 28F here yesterday morning when I rode in to work, and roughly 30 this morning. Get some nice warm gear, and you don't even feel the cold, and the riding is quite nice as long as the roads are clear and dry. I also rode on New Years Day last year, seeing as there was no snow in my area, it was a lovely 15F.

Snow on the ground or gun season begins. Deer get way too jumpy around Nov 15th here. Even during bow season is selective riding, and usually only for commuting purposes.

But temperature has nothing to do with my decision to ride.

I rode in southwestern MI the other day at around that temp and said I wouldn't drive at night again this season.  Then again, I'm wearing a jean jacket and regular dress pants.  Nothing real warm.  I'd go much colder if I had the right gear.

I rode from Woodward, Oklahoma to Denver yesterday, with temps from 28 -45 F-

Even though I was in full gear with all of the liners, I was basically cold all day. Need some better gloves!

The high 20's to low 30's are no big deal at all. You definitely find out where the air leaks and/or poor insulation is when the windchill starts going sub zero.

The coldest was +5F for an hour or so at 50mph. I had to resort to my cold weather gear instead of crash gear on that ride since the windchill was in the -45F range. It was a little frosty on the outside however I was quite warm beneath the windproof insulation. Nowadays I'm a lot smarter and draw the line as when the thermal protection doesn't allow crash gear can't be worn.

I'm outdoors 24/7/365 with no warm storage building or preheater so the biggest problem with cold temperature riding is a cold soaked engine. It just doesn't like to start once the engine is seriously cold for any length of time.

The typical show stopper is snow and ice on the road. Once they put out ball bearings, um, sand, on the pavement I call it quits until they clean up the mess. There's just no way to safely ride in today's murderous cager world without reliable traction.

I figure I have maybe 3-4 more useful days I can ride before I pull the battery and shut down the motorcycle for winterover. In the meantime, I'm going to be extremely cautious about deer. They're all over the place in the mountains where I ride.

We're getting a bit of an "Indian Summer" this week (if I can use that term?)
Temperatures will be in the upper 50's.
I'm going to take advantage of it and ride as much as possible this week. Calling for wet snow by next Monday.
Each time I fill up with gas I add fuel stabilizer, just in case its my last ride for the season.

Here's the 5 day forecast.

In Ontario, when you get bike insurance, you have to pay the full year and you cannot cancel it...well, you can cancel it, but you won't get any money back.

Also, when you cancel it resets your rates and when you go to get insurance in the spring you start from scratch...like you are a new driver.

Yeah, most insurance companies down here are pro-rated or short-rated which means they will give you some money back if you cancel.  Every insurance company is different though.

I have full coverage with a $250 deductible on my 'hawk for $97/year (after multi-bike discount).  It's not worth it to cancel coverage.

Yeah...Michigan's got a tax of $125 right up front that we have to pay for any vehicle we insure.  It's crap, but its part of the deal, so yeah...we're a little higher.  I'm not sure how much I'll get back if I even cancel, it may not be worth it.
