"Aging is inevitable. Maturing is an option!"

« on: November 14, 2010, 12:37:01 PM »

Got up at 5:30 am yesterday to help my neighbor change the oil on RWB before we head out.  By 6:00 am, we are geared up and idling out with a temp of about 55 degrees.  It warmed up to about 78 in the middle of the day, and we got 1 small shower on the way home about 10 miles from the house.

Ride was about 400 miles total.  About 2 weeks ago, we rode to Natchez, Mississippi and had a blast.  So we slabbed it back to  Natchez, gassed up,  and then hit the Natchez Trace Parkway.

http://www.nps.gov/natr/index.htm

Rode North about 50 miles and turned around and rode South back to Natchez.  Then slabbed it home.  Hope you enjoy the pics.

I believe these trees are called Drake Elms - I thought they were pretty.

Brody took the chin fairing off RWB and he likes it better without it.  That makes one of us.

The Natchez Trace was a trail originally formed by the woods animals, then Native Americans, and finally, by river boat traders.  They would float down the Miss. River to Natchez, sell/trade their wares, disassemble the boat, load the wood onto a cart (or sometimes build a cart with the boat materials), and then take the trace up to their homes.  Then rebuilt the river boat and do it all over again.

The Natchez Trace Parkway is 445 miles of this - beautiful, perfectly smooth, nearly traffic-free, 50 mph road.

Like most parkways, this is not a "ride hard" twisty road.  It's meant to be taken slow, so you can enjoy the serenity.  At this time of year, the leaves are turning, but there is still plenty of green.

We stop at an Indian Mound - pretty neat.

This guy was blowing this horn there - he's pretty good.

Big Mound.

A little farther North, there are plenty of roadside creeks to explore.

And lots of parkway to enjoy.  Brody is having a blast on his bike.  We ride together quite often.

There are lots of these fields with wooden fences to check out.

What a great day on the bikes.

No too many pics this time, as I was enjoying the riding more.  Brody had so much fun that he is taking off Thursday to go back.  A couple of his H/D friends are going to.  I'm invited, but I don't know if I can get away.

How blessed I am to have my health and be able to enjoy this great country!

Great pics!  Looks like some fun roads.  I know some might think this is blasphemy, but speed isn't always required for a good time. beer

Love that splash of red. Do you get a lot of fall (winter?) color down there?
It all looks so peaceful.

Sounds like a nice ride. The photos are beautiful. I live in Madison, MS (Northern suburb of Jackson) only 3-4 miles from the Trace. I try and ride it every chance I get - I love the ride on the western edge of the Barnett Reservoir.

Those of you that have met me know that I like to ride, in Ari's words, "spirited" at times.  Yesterday was not one of those times.  I would leave a stop and smell spot, run the bike up the gears to about 45-50 mph, and just relax and enjoy the scenery.  It was delightful.

Burgi - it was peaceful.  We do not get much color, but an occasional "splash" as you put it.  Those trees with the red leaves were scattered throughout the parkway.  It was lovely.  I've driven the Natchez Trace in the Spring, when the wild flowers and dog wood trees are in bloom.  It's equally beautiful.

Rdg20 - we turned around at mile marker 52 I believe.  Still a bit south of Vicksburg, and plenty south of Jackson, as you know.  We left the house intending to play around on the Mississippi country roads South of Natchez.  During our first gas stop, I was telling Brody that one day I wanted to ride the Natchez Trace Parkway.  He replied  "Why don't we go check it out now?"  2 minutes later, we were on our way.

We are talking about a 3-4 day weekend in the Spring to do the entire Natchez Trace Parkway.  Should be a nice trip.

Good report and pics Pants.  The road looks very smooth.  Must have been hard to throttle back.  I've heard they enforce the 50mph limit vigorously.  Ride on HP.

Pants, now you see whatI have enjoyed for so many miles!
We can see so much more of the beauty at 50-60 without needing to give full attention to the curve!
Don't get me wrong,a spirited run up to 125 still makes my adrenalin pour!
You guys hit the NT at a better time than I did,it was too hot in August.

A good riding friend of ours wants to ride the Trace this spring with me and Hutch...maybe you'll join us?

The Drake Elms--those are the same trees you saw lining downtown Augusta. They certainly are beautiful every season of the year.

CB - that would be cool - let's talk about it in the Spring.  I'm hoping to rope in a few of NHF members and make is a mini-rally to hold us off until the Deals Gap Extravaganza.   Hap1

Right you are re: the Elms in Augusta.  I was trying to remember where I recently saw a patch of those trees.  At my age, I can't remember what I had for breakfast.   gerg

Edit - just realizing that all of my pictures depict the road making a left hand turn.  Trust me, there were right handers as well.  Kind of looks like I ride on a remote Nascar track.   ImaPoser

Very carefully.  I have a Vista Throttle Lock to hold the bike at a steady speed:

http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=&L2=&L3=&L4=&item=TUC_07-4043_G

I try to pick a section of road with no traffic, and then just shoot pictures like crazy.  Out of 100 pics, I usually get 3 or 4 worth keeping.

Yeilding to Coffee Brake if she already has plans, but if there are none, I think by mid-March, the flowers should be blooming.

Catching up on some ride reports.  This one looks just about perfect.  The road condition looks like it was just paved.  Great shots as always!
