I did an oil change on my 84 650 NH this weekend and when i took off the oil filter cover the sealent pretty much came off the edges, not the rubber ring seal, but what i guess was some kind of paste sealent that they just covered the edges with but i didn't think anything of it i thought the rubber seal would be just fine by itself so i replaced the filter and put the cover back on well now im haveing oil leaks from the filter cover, i guess my question is what kind of sealent would be strong and wouldn't damage the rubber seal? and could the leak be something else like mabe i could have put the cover on upside down or something stupid like that?

I just had the same problem. There is another large o-ring behind the oil cooler plate. It comes off easily and the o-ring is the same size as the one on the oil filter.

I ended up putting on one of those metal adapter rings from Randakk cycle that allows a spin on filter. $60 well spent in my honest opinion.

The rubber o-ring needs to be replaced.  Who ever did the last filter change must have used some kind of sealant rather than replacing the bad o-ring.

When you buy a Honda brand oil filter it comes with 2 o-rings, one for the bolt one for the filter case.  There is also a washer that goes between the spring and the filter that often gets lost and thrown away with the old filter.  Make sure it is there.
