Last week I jumped on the V65 on my birthday to celebrate #44 and went for a long ride in the country on one of my favorite roads. I grabbed my camera on the way out and took a bunch of pictures.

It's North Bank Road, a few miles north of Roseburg, Oregon. It runs alongside the North Umpqua River (on the north bank of the river, hence the road's name). The river goes up about 6,000' to it's source at Maidu Lake, near Crater Lake, but I didn't go that far up. I just went up to Colliding Rivers, which is a spot where two rivers run into each other and become one. When the water level is high, the two rivers crash together and make a big, roaring whitewater. But the level isn't that high this time of year, so it's pretty tame for now.

The forecast said some sun and small chance of rain, but it was overcast all day and drizzly in parts, so the pictures are a bit more drab than I was hoping for. Still a nice ride, though. I plan to do the same in the spring when it's sunny and everything is green and much prettier, so I'll post another report then. For now, here's some of my 'late fall' local scenery.

This is the spot where the two rivers collide, coming from the left and right (can't see them in this picture) and meeting in the middle. It's quiet and tame until the rivers rise with the melting snowpack in the mountains. From this point, it's about another two hours or so up to Crater Lake.

Thanks, guys. Here's a picture of me with the bike. This one was taken on a short ride in another area the day before.

Hmm, there's an idea. I could get one of those compact folding ones, and I could probably figure a way to strap a small ice chest to the luggage rack...  think2

My dad had one of those folders years ago. I don't remember if he ever caught anything with it.

I haven't been fishing since I was a kid. I want to try it again, but it would probably be a comedy of errors.  Hap1

Not yet. I'm still crunching numbers, seeing what I can do. It's not an easy time of year, with Christmas coming up.

Puppy what sort of hand guards are on that bike? They look more fabric than hard plastic?

They're stiff foam with fabric on the outside, got them at WalMart. They secure at the inner end with a velcro strap. The right one is a bit of a problem because the throttle cables are getting in the way, making the bottom edge stay up a bit too high, so the wind at freeway speed makes it pop up. But I think I've figured out a way to secure that one so it won't be a problem.

But they do a good job of blocking the wind, my hands don't get nearly as cold.

I'm going to see if I can find those, seems like you can take them on and off pretty easy? I'd like something for night rides when it is cooler but don't need it during the day. Plus I don't have space to mount anything else on my bars.  shog
Thanks for the tip.  thumb

Yeah, just a velcro strap that wraps around the bar. I've actually got them wrapped around the clutch/brake master cylinders, but where you wrap the strap will depend on the design of the bike. A friend also has them on his V45 Sabre (I got the idea from him).

It's getting colder here, starting to rain now. We had a little snow the other day.
