Been wanting something a little better suited for long trips than the '82 650. Saw one of these some time ago and just fell in lust with it, and rode this one away from the dealer yesterday... '98 ST1100, 83K miles, ABS, TCS (w/ linked braking system) with documented service records. Impeccable mechanically...few cosmetic things to fix up (eventually, lol ) Rode it off the lot for $2500 out the door (after taxes, title, dealer fees...etc) to a friend's house about an hour away...absolutely perfect ride. I LOVE the NightHawk for short rides, its a great bike (for a $600 1982!)...definitely going to try to keep it. The ST will handle the longer and colder weather hauls. Bill

It is good to hear comments like that...always wonder if it's worth what ya pay... The dealer didn't do themselves any favors by not cleaning it up. Obviously 83K miles is going to show. I actually went and looked at it a few weeks ago, but just the "appearance" looked bad as they hadn't tried to clean it up at all. This time I dug deeper into history, service records...etc. I offered what I thought it was worth, and they accepted. I don't feel "too" guilty!

I love my 02 ST 1100 But one thing the MPH will slip up on you right quick. She is so smooth, you kick it up to where she feels comfortable, and look down at the speedometer, and say oops gotta slow down. I was riding home from work with a friend on his Bussa. We were out on an open hi way, and passed some slower cars, he took off and I grabbed a handful of throttle, and was doing 115 before I knew it. That may not sound like much to some of you younger kids, and more adventuresome people. But that was the fastest this old man has ever been on two wheels. I've been to 145 in a patrol car, but never on a bike. The only thing was it felt good, and smooth, on the ST. I am afraid that it can be addictive. Beetlegeuce, sounds like you got a good deal, and you will be glad you did it. Rusty

Oh I noticed that on the very first ride...when we hit the highway on ramp by the time I had a chance to look down it was at 85. I figured we were doing about 65. It do move!

I like those bikes, keep us updated and if you don't mind let us know what kind of service it has needed. I may consider an ST for a more dedicated touring bike if your holds up well with that many miles.

I'd have to keep the hawk for the day trips though.

Well I did a LOT of looking around...ST forums, online mag articles, bikes for sale...and this single model has notoriously racked up more miles on average than just about anything. I have seen 'em with 100K, 150K, even 200K. You just would not believe this thing has 83K miles on it if you heard it run (not to mention how quickly it starts up cold).
There are a couple of minor things that I think could have been designed better...like the ridiculously low mirrors (and resulting unnecessarily narrow windshield that provides no wind relief at all for the hands). The Concours sitting next to it there at least got that part right.
But that V4 engine, with the exposed valve covers on each side...that's just beyond cool!

Bill I agree about the mirrors, but you get used to them after a while. At least I'm not seeing my shoulders all the time like on the hawk. Mine has small spot mirrors attached, and they are cool after getting used to them. If you can see a car in the spot, he is probably too close to change lanes. My hands do get cold, and I have been wondering about some kind of cover or deflectors, or guards like a dirt bike. I think Ari put something like that on his bike for the winter. Rusty

I never noticed that with the Hawk mirrors (only the left one is of much use, the right one vibrates too much!)
I saw an aftermarket windshield (for the ST) somewhere online that extended out over the top of the mirrors. Hopefully can find that again!

Bill I got the "Ears" for my ST, havn't realy got out in cold air just yet but they seem to deflect air away from the hands. I didn't paint them they came in black, and fit up close to the tinted windscreen so they look ok. Thanks for the link. Rusty
