Hey everybody, Im still pretty new here. I hope im posting this in the right place. My dilemma is this, I bought my bike (84 700s) with the speedo and tach needles broken off. they were stubby but I could still read the guages easily. Just before putting my bike up for the winter it started to produce a high pitch whine at any speed. Which was very irritating and a bit embarassing while riding through town. I removed my speedo cable and sprayed some lube in the cable and into the backside of the speedo, under the direction of forum members. This however did not fix my problem, and the horrible whine continues, and my speedo reading is in and out, it will show the speed and the whine starts up, then it drops to zero and the whine stops. Im assuming this means that the gauge is a lost cause.
after calling local salvage yards and scouring ebay. I am unable to find a direct replacement. Can a gauge from a more common bike, or an aftermarket gauge, be used in its place? parts for this bike are seemingly pretty difficult to come-by.

Are you shure it is not a cable problem? If it is a cable problem you can get an aftermarket one from a company called motion pro.  If the speedo drive itself is shot then the only thing you can really do is try to find another one on Ebay.  Somebody on the board here might have some parts that could help you out too.

I'd just get a new cable from Honda for $25, put it on and try that first before guessing at anything else.

Is there anyway to tell if it is the cable or the speedo itself? or do u just have to get a new cable and see if that solves it?

Get a new cable and see if that solves it.

The other stuff isn't available new and expensive if you find it used on ebay.

The 84 speedo is different than the 85 and 86 also.

Install it's screws gently, things crack easily.

Then there's the possibility of the no longer available new speedo front wheel gearbox:

Same guy's got a used cable too:

37K miles is not new by any means.....just examples.

Id be willing to bet the cable is bad. speedometers dont usually go bad.
