As a general update for Pants and anyone else following my progress, as of right now I am waiting on:
New Carb intake boots and washers
Pilot Screw washers and o-rings
Used '96 caliper in good shape
All these things should be in by Friday so with fingers crossed I'm hoping to get her out for a test ride by late Saturday afternoon.

Got the valve shims but haven't installed them yet...hopefully see this weekend. After making sure the valves are in spec if it's still not right I guess I'll be at square one.  |

Yep, I already had two and only needed two more. I found some on fleabay for $8 shipped though. I'll remember it for next time though. Just a general update: I've systematically gone through a troubleshoot thread on the GS500 forum and replaced parts as needed. The last thing left was to adjust/replace valves since that is the most difficult. Clearance on all 4 valves was too tight, to the point I couldn't spin several of the buckets freely. One of the admins on the GS forum has been helping me out and said that valves not closing fully can mimic the symptoms of an intake leak. Hopefully once I get the clearance back in spec she will finally start purring. All this hassle will just make it that much more satisfying though.  |

I am also very interested in learning the procedure for valve lash adjustment for the Bandit engine. I think I can get my boys down at the bike shop to do it on the cheap, but I'd still like to bring myself up to speed on it. The previous owner said the last adjustment really brought the bike alive.

Boy do I hate doing shims..... awesome project! i had the 1/2 size of jen's concours - an ex500. very nice to have adjustability without needing additional parts, though i hear shim-under-the-bucket is supposed to be a more efficient design. i worked on it so much, i could have that ex to the frame in under 2 hours. i'm looking forward to hearing first impressions! |

Nah...been busy with school, house addition, and other crap. After the deals gap rally I'll probably tear into her and fix my problem, which I'm pretty sure is a dropped intake valve on the #2 cylinder. Pics and step by step will be posted here.  |
