Some of my riding targets are the scenic byways in NC. There is one that starts near my home and closely follows the Neuse River almost to the coast. Down and back is a little long for a day ride, but I noticed the Bentonville Battleground just off the path, so I made that the target and plotted the path.
Another of the draws of this route is the ability to ride Devil's Racetrack Road. The legend is that travelers could hear the devil riding his horse on this road, but they could never be seen.
This was my first ever visit to a civil war battleground and I must say that I was moved by the experience. Its one thing to read about the battles and look at maps, but is is another to stand on the ground and look across the fields where men fought and died. I really need to return to the site another day, because the museum was closed and I would really like to take the audio tour.
Bentonville was the last major battle of the civil war. Johnston attempted to attack the rear of Sherman's army, but a flooded creek prevented the attack and later almost trapped Johnston's army. Johnston eventually surrendered to Sherman in Durham. This occurred after Lee's surrender in Appomattox and against the orders of Confederate president Jefferson Davis.
This was a great ride, which I plan to repeat. Saw some great scenery and almost no cages. Stopped in Four Oaks for the obligatory BBQ sandwich. Haven't been called "honey" that much in a long time.
I'll post more pics with a little more write up later tonight in my blog.

Thanks for the pics drdubb. I know what you mean about the battleground. We went to Gettysburg a couple years ago.

Gettysburg is definitely on my new list. I think I could put together a pretty good ride between Raleigh and Gettysburg.

Thanks for the pix dr. My parents took us to Gettysburg when I was around 10 or 11. They hired a guide who rode in our car with us. We drove all around the area with this fella setting the stage and explaining what had gone on. I remember it vividly and have always wanted to go back.

Looks like you had the place to yourself. Seems like that would add to the experience?

It was lonely. There were two other couples floating around, but not even near enough to note. I was also surprised at the emptiness of the roads. ( I did pass a small group of ST's and Gold Wings going the other way)
