Need to pick some brains and figure this problem out. battery charged, solenoid firing, starter spins, and that is it, motor is free. But not turning over when starter spins, is starter constant mesh or does the starter gear extend and retract?

I'm also leaning towards starter clutch...unless you have a broken starter chain.  umph

I don't think that engine has the starter/alt chain. Doesn't the '83 750 engine still have the alternator on the end of the crank?

The '79-'83 750/900 starter clutches aren't supposed to be held on as tight as the 1100 ones, but so far I've always ended up using a 3 legged puller to get them off, no matter which engine.

Some guys just pull the starter clutch apart, stretch the springs a little bit, then reassemble it, but new springs are cheap.  Make sure to use red loctite on the 3 bolts.
thanks a bunch for the advice  super
