I have a 82 cb650 nighthawk and i am looking to make it into a cafe racer. I don't know if this is possible? I would like to put a different gas tank on, like one from the 79 cb650.  I would just like to have a project bike and make it into something? What is the best way to go with this year/model, bomber or cafe racer? Thanks for your time.

It seems like the bobber, hard tail style is more popular with nighthawk modders. The angles of the bike aren't really conducive to a cafe style. The exhaust positioning makes rearsets a little awkward with a good chance of your toes melting. If you are ambitious I think you could have a cool cafe thats a little different than the standard cb750 with clip ons. Either way i'm eager to see what you come up with.

I think my biggest question is about the gas tank.. I really wish that the older styles will fit them..

The frame is basically the same. I don't have the manual with me at the moment and I wasn't looking for that specific thing however based on pictures in the shop manual, I recall some differences. I'm fairly sure the fuel tank attach points are not the same. Details beyond that I can't recall at the moment.

What shape is your tank in? If you find the one you want and your tank is in decent condition would you be selling it when you replace it?
