I got a chance to do some cleaning up on my newly acquired 1984 Nighthawk put about 200 or so miles on it so far and I LOVE IT! I've already had a guy come up to me and ask what year it was, he said "man if you owned that thing in 1984 you would've pickup up so many women!" that gave me a good laugh!
the engine is pretty dusty, and its too cold to even think of hitting it with water, odds are it'll freeze in the wrong places if i do it now.

Your bike is looking great.  I'm curious to know how those mufflers sound.

On my 700 (since sold), I used a product by Wizard to polish the aluminum pieces on the motor.

Really made the bike pop.  I did not use this product on the wheels - that shiny aluminum is coated with something.  Instead, I simply waxed the rims with regular Nu-finish car wax.

I really like the looks of that exhaust. Do you think it was made for the 700s? or has someone rigged it up to work?

I'm not sure on the exhaust as I bought it with those pipes on it, I've seen jsut a few pictures online with other nighthawk 700's that have them, apparently they were made by cobra in the late 80's. that's about all i know, they seem like they were meant for the bike.

here's another bike i saw with these mufflers, on a nighthawk owners website of some sort.

The exhaust looks to me like the stock black chrome exhaust? Mufflers cut off and slip-ons installed?

I have a red '85 with those "F1" muffers on it. The bike is a little faster than stock (as with all modified 700-S exhausts), but is also louder than a stock 700-S system. It does not sound the same, and (in my opinion) nowhere near as good as the stock exhaust.

If I can get to storage, I'll take pics of that bike (and the other 9/nine 700-S bikes there). They all have their good points, but none there are like new (a couple are close though).

All the aluminum parts on the 700-S were coated ("clear coated") with clear paint. They did this to protect/keep the aluminum from discoloring and oxidation....

You will see that most 700-S bikes have "fuzziness" on some areas of the valve cover, and also the clutch cover (and other aluminum covers on the engine). This is from moisture getting under the clear, and oxidizing the aluminum. It is even worse in these areas, because the moisture is trapped, and really festers the aluminum.

If the metal polish was working, it was either polishing the clear, or had already worn through the clear, and really was polishing the aluminum at that point....If applied to a clear coated piece on the bike, it would only polish the clear a little, and would not take away the white fuzzy area till you wore away all the clear on top of the part (and then it would take a  LONG time to get rid of the oxidation, as oxidation is taking away of the actual material of the metal/aluminum.

Rust on metal parts is the same type of oxidation process,a nd when the rust is cleaned up, you will see pitted, and/or missing metal (same holds true on the aluminum).

Sorry for the "long winded explanation", but I've been asked this question many times on these bikes, and figured I would share the info with the group.
