Hi all, I've been interested in these NightHawks ('84, '85, and '86) for a while now. This weekend I got a chance to get one. Here is the craigslist ad: http://columbiamo.craigslist.org/mcy/2246087183.html Some assembly required, obviously. It looks like I'll be pulling the engine to fix the 2nd gear issue (which I researched here before buying the bike...so I more or less knew what I was getting into). It came with a manual, so that's pretty cool as well. I have to start working on getting 25 posts, because I'm sure I'll be needing to buy/sell some stuff on the classifieds. I'll get some photos of it when I go pick it up and bring it home. Thanks for looking! Clem

Another member, Laminar, was eyeing that same bike. Welcome to the group. In the picture, the bike looks bent, like it was wrecked pretty bad (rear-ended). In reality, does the bike look strait?

Oh...in the CL photo, the tank and plastics and seat are just loosely perched on the frame in an attempt by the PO to show that he had all the parts.
The frame looks fine. And most of the parts seem to be there. Here's hoping!

My first question is which of the three shift forks is the one that goes bad/bends/breaks and causes the 2nd gear problem? Is the the Left, Right, or "Main" (center) one?
I need to work on tracking one down (a shift fork). I have half a mind to have one (or a few) machined, since this is a common issue with these bikes.

Dang, I just scrapped a junk 700 motor that had good trans parts. I could have kept the forks if I had seen this post sooner. have fun with the tear down, its a pretty in depth project.

Thanks for the welcome, all. I should go pick the bike up tonight and bring it home. I don't plan to have this running for another year...but you never know.

It seems that everyone gets excited about the red, white, and blue bikes. While I like them as well...the paint on this one is pretty beat up (and not original on the headlight fairing). Unfortunately, if I repaint it, it will likely not be the original paint scheme.
I can already see that won't be a popular choice. However, the way I see it, if the bike is being ridden, it's worthwhile.
Paint can be changed relatively easy on bikes, too...so that's good.

So here are a just a few more photos of the bike. I haven't been able to take the time to get any good shots...but this gives you an idea what I'm gettting into here. Lots of cleaning will be necessary: This tank is beat up pretty bad: The headlight fairing looks like it has been repainted (and the windscreen looks like it has been blacked out too ): As the weather warms up...I'll start working toward getting the engine out of the bike. Something cool happened last week. Someone local told me he knew were there was another Nighthawk sitting at what looked like an abandoned house. It's also a red, white, and blue...and in rough shape.
I tracked down the address of the owner of the property. There's a letter on the way in the mail right now asking if the bike could be purchased (or hauled off!).
I'm hoping I hear back from them and end up with a parts bike! Time will tell...

Nice looking bike, it looks like the fairing may have just had the decals removed..or does it look like they painted over the decals? Fixer up and maker new. I am looking for places to ride to so if you get it going this summer, I will have to ride my 85 700s down.
