Have been the proud new owner of a 1984 Nighthawk 650 for about a month now. It's my first bike and first time riding ever and I've been riding this baby for a few weeks now (a little bit everyday). I'm IN LOVE. Garage kept, sounds great, aftermarket "Dodge Ram Silver." Few modifications I would like to do to the bike but will have to weigh whether it's worth it (not sure I want to spend 1/4 the price of the bike on a mod): single 7" round headlight, daytona or clubman bars, maybe new gauges (if I want to spend that much), some slimmer signals. Excited to join your community !

Few modifications I would like to do Just an objective observation: You haven't been riding enough yet to know whether you really need the modifications or whether they just seem like a good idea based on lack of experience with motorcycles in general. A lot of things seem like a good idea until you understand why they are setup the way they are through direct experience. Give it a full riding season or preferably a year and 4000+ miles then rethink the modifications idea again. How are you set on crash gear? If you have nothing or minimal gear that would be the absolute best place to put any allocated motorcycle money. MSF would be a very good idea too if you haven't taken it. ATGATT

Tryvelcro: Yes, paint came with it (previous owner did it I believe)
Bumblebee: Excellent point and I think it certainly applies to the handlebars. The signals, headlamp, and gauges are purely a cosmetic decision. Would love to match more of the look of the 82's headset – all round. And yes, gear absolutely comes first. I have everything covered but some really good boots and a jacket with proper armor. I've got a bike jacket that will save my hide if I go down but will want to shell out for one with armor soon. Still riding on the temps so when I get my endorsement and can legally hit the highway I'll probably get on that.
Thanks for the concern!

Remember when yo start thinking about changing lighting, especially signals, that smaller isn't Always better if the cager can't see them as well.

Would love to match more of the look of the 82's headset – all round. Agreed on that. I think the rectangle ones look stupid. The designer either went cheap or had no artistic skills whatsoever. Just ride a little while and get use to it first. I've got a bike jacket that will save my hide if I go down but will want to shell out for one with armor soon. Still riding on the temps so when I get my endorsement and can legally hit the highway I'll probably get on that. Don't wait on the armored jacket. There's no such thing as too much protection when the Earth starts beating on you. The non highway pavement is just as hard and brutal. You're more likely to get clobbered off the highway than on it. Tryvelcro is right about the smaller lights. I'd replace each light with a quarter million candlepower spotlight if the people making the rules would let me get away with it. Well, except for the brake light and high beam. The ones in my mind would strip the paint off the cage behind me when I touched the brake and the front one would melt oncoming cars at half a mile.

Moby - I really like the silver. I've got an 83 650 in wineberry and I've wanted to repaint...will have to consider the silver. I put some buell signals on the rear and plan to do the same on the front. They blend better.
BB - I like your attitude about lights..... those are my next purchase. Any recommendations?

Welcome to the forums and nice bike. All I can say is make sure you get the jacket and boots before you take that sucker out for another ride. I recently rear-ended a car with my 650 and my gear was the only thing that saved my hide. Not sure what type of helmet you have, but make sure it's a full face if you want to save your jaw. Plus full-face helmets are just plain cool IMHO. Ride safe.
