I finally found an Insurance company that is perfect for antique motorcycles. I have a 1985 Nighthawk 750SC, Cooperators Ins. gave me a quote for regular insurance with just liability over $1,000 but they also have antique insurance I had to get the bike appraised $2,500-3,000 at a cost of $120 and I now have FULL coverage at less than $200/yr. I was paying $504 just liability so check it out!

Wow,
Meloche MOnex wants over 1000$ for a year.... I nearly pooped myself.
I talked to "The Personel" and they want about 500....which seems more reasonable.
What condition does your bike need to be in to qualify as antique? What are the conditions of driving the vehicle? Can iy be a daily commuter?
Who would you recommend to a first time MC insurance purchaser?
Thanks

Who would you recommend to a first time MC insurance purchaser? I use state farm. A little known secret: For decent rates on any vehicle you have to physically walk into the office and talk to the individual office personnel face to face, not just call a phone number thus ending up talking to a disembodied voice with a script. Also the prices are all over the board right off their computers from one office to the next so shop around even within the same company. The first state farm I went to said IIRC $800 ever 6 months for liability only. (I paid $600 for the motorcycle BTW) The next office said $80/yr for liability only. I plopped down my money got insured then asked why the big difference. It turns out the first office is run by a guy who hates motorcycles so he jacks the rates through the roof for anyone who wants motorcycle insurance through him. I had a similar problem with the motorhome...apparently it's totally uninsurable in any form at any price through the company yet two blocks away it was very insurable for a surprisingly low price even using it fulltime.

With the antique ins. it has to be 25yrs or older but you have to have an appraisal done $120 they look at everything on your bike to determine value there is also a limit of 3,000 kms/yr which I don't come close to. When I started riding about 8-9 yrs ago I started with Primmum Ins. then Rider's Plus, then Kingsway,Jevco but the best deal so far is Cooperators.

I went with "The Personal" They charged 542 for the year, for a first time rider with an M1 license, that's very fair I think. So thrilled I took it out for my forst ride today, around the neighbourhood. It was awesome. Can't wait till tomorrow.

Just for the US readers, price for (bike) insurance in Canada is different in the US. The price we pay is much higher then the US and this is because we have 'no fault' insurance. Which means if you get into an accident, your own insurance company pays for your claims. Regardless of what the other person has or doesn't have for insurance. The issue that Canadians have with this, is that you pay into a pool, which means your premiums go up to help pay for everyone else's accidents. Little weight is given in your insurance price if you have a clean record. But allot of weight is given if you record is not clean.
Thanks for pointing this savings out, SouthBrucePen. I currently have insurance through Jevco at $500 per year. I'd love to take advantage of the plan you mentioned but I ride more then 3000 Km's on per year. If I just used my bike for commuting and no excursions, I'd be able to take advantage of it.

I use a local insurance broker. For liability on my NH, camping trailer, and SOQS's car, plus full coverage on my Suburban, I pay less than $200/mo. I'd be happy to share her info with anyone in the Portland area if you're interested. Just PM me.
