Once I finally decided to make room for it and sold the Vmax, I spent way too much time on CL and local ads, looking for a first-generation Bandit 1200. A deal fell into my lap but I had to move very quickly to get it, so Monday I threw the ramp into HOKS's truck and rolled out before dawn.

I came home with a 1999 model in Green, with the blacked-out engine. The color I wanted!
It's a little rough, it needs carbs synched, cables lubed, hydraulics flushed, some detailing. The fuel gauge doesn't work. But WOW it's powerful! It is the torquiest in-line four I've ever ridden. Where the Vmax was a Scottish-sword-swinging power delivery, this...this is like pouring fuel on fire.
I may get into trouble with this bike...

I discovered the Bandit when I worked in a bike shop, a Bandit came in with water in the tank. After going through everything, the mechanic said it needed to be ridden to get the vapors all through the lines and ensure all the water was gone, and told me to put 30 miles on it. So I did. I was in love with it before I shifted into second. I love the lean, narrow profile and riding position is perfect for me. And, I already scored a used Corbin for it. I gave myself a limit to spend on a bike, but I got such a good deal, now I have enough for a Corbin, a luggage rack, AND some new riding pants to match my waterproof jacket!

Anyway, it came with a new set of stainless headers (supposedly worth over $400), a manual, a really nice Oxford tank bag, a touring shield, and an extra new chain, although the chain on there is brand new x-ring.
Owner was mad at himself for listing it so low but I called first and he stood by his word and let me have first dibs. Nice guy, he has a really well-done FJR for sale and I can vouch for it if anybody's interested....PANTS....

Here's the required pics...

Nice looking bike Jenn.  I think I like the green, but can't quite tell from the pics.

I would assume you are riding this one to the rally?

Man, I want a sport touring bike bad, but the more I look at the big Bandits, maybe that would be a better choice?  I'm sure that thing is better setup for touring than the NH, and I'm sure it's better in the twisties.

So many bikes.... so little money.   Sad

Congrats, Jenn. I absolutely LOVE mine still. Althought it is currently not running.  banghead I need to clean out the jets. Other than that, it has been one of the most fun bikes I have ever ridden. (Don't tell the NH I said that) naughty It is comfortable for long rides and the power that these thing have is very addictive. Now that I have a set of saddlebags and a tank bag, I am dying to take it on a weekend trip somewhere far. I'm looking forward to seeing it after you have had time to detail it and make it your own.

One word of caution for you... With the power and torque that the 1200 pushes out, it will sky the front end very easily if you're not careful. I found that out on accident once... Then on purpose a few more times after that.  shog

Do you plan to put on the other pipes?

18k miles (forgot until just now to take a photo with a receipt, so my 2011 miles will be off by a hundred or so). I'm not thrilled with the sound of this slip-on but I'll live with it for a while till I hear one I like.
The bike has definitely gone skating on grass on both sides, but the damage was minimal. Worth it for the price, anyway.
I'm kinda girly-scared to wheelie it but I DO want to try it....

Pants if you're looking to sport-tour, get a dedicated sport-tourer. If you get a Bandit or other "standard," you'll just be out another grand for luggage and touring stuff. The concours, FJR, and ST1100/1300 will come ready-to-pack.
This FJR has had major suspension upgrades ($$$) done to it and the price was about $4500, I think the owner will step off of that. It has a lot of miles but that is not an issue with the FJR. It's silver. I heard it run, it was certainly tuned right and looked new.

A suggestion for a different slip on... Mine has a Viper oval canister muffler on it that you can get from ebay for $199.00 and free shippng.

It has a really nice, mellow sound to it and won't wake up your neighbors in the morning yet, when you get on the throttle, it has a nice growl to it.

Here is a link.

Nice looking Bandit Jenn  thumb

I really like that fairing. Is that particular fairing stock for that year? From the Bandits I've seen, I thought their fairings were shaped a bit different. But then again, I might not have been paying that close of attention.

Thanks, I ain't going nowhere. Ain't selling my NH yet either till I'm sure I like this bike.

I think I REALLY like this bike.

This body style is the first generation Bandit 1200, from '96-'00. They're all like that. I like it better than the second gen, from '01-05. Then the 1250's from 06 on....I think, anyway. Ask Soup!

Looks good Jenn. I like those bikes as well and it seems like they can be had for a fair price. Is it just the first generation that has the color matched frames?

While it has the power to do power wheelies I have herd that power wheelies are harder to control than clutch wheelies. So if your going to "try" and wheelie I would do so with the clutch not just laying on the power. And cover that rear break.

Still like it. It's tank-to-tank comfortable, just like my Nighthawk.

I scored a used Corbin to fit it and it arrived in time for this weekend, over 500 miles of highway and mountain roads. No hiccups, no problems. The Corbin is perfect for long days and I got about 40 mpg even at 80 mph.

The throttle transition is abrupt; it will take some getting used to. That is the one key issue that makes me reluctant to let go of my Nighthawk: that much power with a touchy throttle. Especially leaned over in a turn. The Nighthawk is more user-friendly. Heck the Nighthawk is all about user-friendly.
