I am new to the forum and am in need of some help. My 82 Nighthawk will start with a little bit of choke and then idle for about 10 seconds and die. If I throttle it up with the choke and then maintain an RPM of above 1800 it runs fine. I've run up and down the expressway with no problems, but it is really getting annoying having to maintain the throttle at every stop light. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Idle adjustment screw, big black knob in the middle of the carbs. (at least it is on the newer Nighthawks). Turn it to the right , (clockwise), until you can get the engine to continue to run. The slowly back it off and see what the lowest rpm you can get it to keep running. If it will hold 1000 rpm, you are good to go, if not, report back.

What happens below 1800 rpms? Also, run some seafoam through a couple of tanks of gas, it will help clear out the carbs a little (which can also cause this problem).

I replaced the spark plugs, put some seafoam in and ran one tank so far. Doesn't seemed to have had any affect on problems. Once the rpm's drop below 1800 or so I can't throttle it up without using the choke. I had already used the idle screw to bring the idle up to about 1800 or so just to make it so I can get around. My motorcycle is the only mode of transportation at this time. Thanks for the advice.

I have no idea what GTO6T6 is talking about, the bike should idle at around 1100, without the clutch rattle or cam adjustment nonsense.
I am going with dirty carbs. Do you have a manual?
