Just purchased a 1983 Nighthawk 650. One of the previous owners made some aesthetic changes including a black gas tank and new blinkers which leads me to believe that maybe it was dropped years ago but it starts up and runs perfectly, regardless of whatever may have happened in the past! I have to admit, I kind of like the paint choices and I'd be lying if I said I didn't care about such things.
I have a little bit of riding experience, mostly on my first bike, a '79 suzuki ts125 which was stolen last year (may it RIP) but I am very much still a beginner. Lets say this is my first big boy motorcycle. I got to take it out on my first ride today and I'm in love already.
I did the vinegar/baking soda trick on the gas tank earlier this week and it did a good job on the rust.
Next, I should probably get new tires. The local shop will put Dunlop D404's on for $275. Any thoughts?
There are a few other cosmetics that I'm thinking of taking care of. Has anyone re-chromed their exhaust pipes or muffler to fix rust patches?
Very much looking forward to chatting on this forum and, of course, more riding!

Nice Bike... Welcome to the forum and Nighthawk ownership. How many miles on her? Mine has 48K... and is completely stock with the exception of the turn signals...and she still runs really well. Best of luck with yours.

These 650's are a lot of fun. Ride safe! (from a former New Englander)

Nice aftermarket 4-1 exhaust on it. Keep an eye to see if the tank rust comes back. If so, you might want to look at getting it coated. You can do it yourself and its not expensive.

to the NHF. In regards to your question on rechroming your exhaust, it will most likely cost you more to have the old chrome stripped off and replated than to go buy a new complete system. A new system will cost around $350 and replating will probably run $400 to $500 bucks. I have had several bike parts plated in the past and they are not cheap. Congrats on the new bike.

to the forums. Very nice looking 650 you got there. I had the Dunlop 404's on my 650 before I crashed it, and I liked them alot. The price seems about right.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the advice. It looks like the chrome I will probably leave as is for now, unless it gets worse but the tires, of course are still top priority. I did some reading on the tire string last night... theres some really great info here!
