I think I'm addicted! I like to Ride!!

I've been doing some maintenance on the XS1100E, adjusting valves, syncing carbs, changing fluids, etc. During the process I drooped a small nut into the engine. This is not what killed it (I don't think) After some exploratory surgery I was able to get ti out. Finally got everyting back to gether and she ran a little better than before the work. (Yea I did it right). I rode it to work the next day and she practically flew down the road. It still had the tapping sound (1 valve was still out of speck, gap was on the big side) that I was hoping to get rid of.The ride to work was uneventful as was the ride home and back for lunch. It felt good to be riding it again, she had been down for about two weeks. ( Bad weather, mishaps and extended family gatherings kept me from finishing the project) The plot thickens... After work I go out to the bike start it up and rode off. She purred right along almost as if she was begging me to open her up. Well once I got out of the residential area and onto the highway, I let her rip and she responded. When I hit 4th gear I hear a loud pop...then rattling like a chain hitting the case. I was thinking that my cam chain tensioner slipped on the hard acceleration but that usually only happens on hard slow down. Then another pop and the rattling stopped and something hit my foot. I was thinking this is not good. Felt the power loss so I let off the throttle, saw a little smoke out the back, then the loss of power got worse and there was no responce to the throttle. I was able to coast to a gas station got off and inspected the bike oilwas dripping from under the front fender. the front tire was soaked with oil infact the whole bike was covered in oil. I knew that i didn't hit anythingand there was no oil patches on the road. I looked at the front on my engine and see something unusual... It was not pretty. Something had put a hole in my engine. I know that I didn't hit anything that would cause that kind of damage. It looked to me that it came from the inside blowing out. So I called my son to bring the truck to take her home. Once he got there we loader her up into the truck and took her home. the next day I went outand started to take her apart.Pulled off the valve coverand the chain was tight and the alignment marks lined up perfectly. so I pulled the spark plug above the hole.(#3 cylinder) It didn't want to come out, I felt the threads being ground out as I pulled the plug. When i finally got it out I was sick... ###WARNING!!! THE FOLLOWING IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HART!!! (Or small childeren or squirrels)### This is what I found I was afraid of the worst . I took a long screw driver and put it into the spark plug hole and found the top of the piston, moved to the center of the piston and the screw driver went further into the engine. I new it was toast. I proceded to take the cams off and then removed the heads. this is what I found... The piston got hungry and ate the valve and end of the spark plug. I already have a replacement engine (its in pieces on my shelves). so it looks like I have a new project to keep me busy. P.S. No squirrels were hurt in writting this post.

Ouch! No rider should ever feel that pain.
So, do you think it was the valve that broke off and caused all that damage? Or do you think the plug fell apart and caused the damage?

I think it could be one of several things. Spinning a bearing causing head slap to eat the valve and the spark plug with a lean mixture causing the piston to melt and pull the valve into the crank an pinning it against the case and popping the hole...but that is just a guess I wish I could have had a cutaway video of what happened on the inside.

WOW!
That is a total load of suck.
The damage is rather amazing in a train wreck sense. Glad you got her off the road safe and sound though.

A little low compression on that cylinder huh?
Are you going to open it up and take a look in the bottom end to see what happened down there?

That really sucks about the engine. Glad that it wasn't anything worse while you were riding it. Other than the initial "POP," did the bike shake at all during the ordeal?

No, no shaking It ran straight and handled like nothing was wrong. It just slowly lost power.

Oh I dunno...I think you could probably patch that up with a little JB Weld. That's a big hole. A couple pieces of flat steel with the JB Weld and you're in business again. Just get the engine to puke up the valve it swallowed first. I do plan on opening it up but that will have to wait until next weekend Good. Post the autopsy up so we can all see what happened in there. I'm interested in what else might have got damaged and where all the metal went. Don't forget to cut open the oil filter and show what's in there. It wouldn't surprise me to see debris somewhere in there big enough to have part numbers on them.
