Hello all, just pulled the hawk out of storage and forgot how much work its going to need haha. Im new to the mechanical parts and disassembly of this bike so i apologize ahead of time. The main thing thats troubling me now is I lost the keys somewhere and have to get replacements. The second thing that I need to do is replace the speedometer cable. I bought an OEM one from the honda dealership and he told me there is a screw you have to back out, and in my CB650 honda manual it shows a screw. On my hawk though there is some sort of oddly shaped cotter pin over the top of the speedo cable at the front wheel. Any ideas or thoughts would be great. The next step is to take the top end of the motor apart and fix the head gasket leak thats going on as well. Sorry for the large size of the pictures, i lowered the quality and size from where it was at but still appears to be too big.

Hailing from Wisconsin

Welcome aboard! Are those the OEM mirrors or new aftermarket ones? They are just what I am looking for from what I see in the pictures.

The OEM ones don't have as much as an offset as those ones above do.

Yeah i believe they might be aftermarket but from a few other 82 nighthawks ive seen they look very similar to the OEM ones. And thank you, its nice to find a good group of people that enjoy hawks.

Thank you zioclive, I really want to find another set of 4 into 4 pipes. The ones on there are rusted through just before the megaphone so its essentially just open right now.

Good luck with that. I've been searching for about 5 years now.
If you do manage to find a source, let me know.

And that's the typical failure on these.

I live up in Cedarburg, just north of Mequon. And bumblebee, do you think it would be possible to reweld the pipes where it has been broken?

It's just a matter of possibly a new internal pipe and welding. You might have to replace the internal pipe itself. Pull the rivets out of the back end then pull it apart and take a look at what's there.

As soon as I can get somewhere with a gas welder, I'll be doing the same thing. Super pretty, no. Functional and reasonably presentable, yes.

I think i may end up just making my own 4 into 4 exhaust from some other pipes if my welding job doesnt go as planned. I figure you can most likely put on any exhaust you want as long as your good with welding. Also Im still looking for the keys for the bike but no luck so far, i just wish there was a way i could get the steering unlocked to even just move it. I know it sounds terrible but is there any way i could make it so any key would fit for the time being, because as it looks ill just end up getting a new ignition module eventually.

Well, sort of, at least to some extent. Back pressure and airflow changes what is needed at the carburetors to maintain the original engine power as well as possibly avoiding engine damage.

Duplicate what was originally there and you'll be ok.

I'm planning on eventually building completely new ones by using the originals as a template.

Yeah i was going to try and rebuild these ones and use the baffles and pipe from other exhausts and then install a jet kit to try and offset if its lean or rich.

I think the engines were the same from 79-82, but perhaps the mount points for the exhaust hangers would differ...?

My 82 had the exact same problem. If I knew how to weld, I would have tried to fix it  Sad

Would the 1980 pipes Fit?

I haven't actually tried due to lack of hardware around and unable to find a 1980 model to measure. 79-82 is the same engine. I'm not sure if they made any physical changes to the engine though. There were some design changes in 81 though they appear to be accessory related, not core engine.
My guess: An 81 would be the most likely to fit. A 79-80 would probably fit however less likely if any changes occurred.
In reality: Your guess is as good as any.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to add that I am doing this swap right now on my 1982 nighthawk. I bought a 1980 engine. The engine fits in the frame, but the carbs from 1982 are offset differently than that of the 1980 engine, I tried to bridge this gap with radiator hose. The exhaust fits perfectly on it. For some reason it didnt start right up so its currently at a shop. Has anyone else gotten this far?

Hi, you could always drill the lock out, that'll get you moving. I just bought an 82 650 Nighthawk and had to drill the fuel cap lock as there was no key for it, now any key fits (including screwdrivers). Think I got a deal though, I only paid £375 (UK), not been on the road since 2005, just balanced the carbs and cleared the fuel lines now its as sweet as. changed the rear lights for 2 small round ones and the indicators for tiny round ones too. I got in the deal another complete frame, engine, tank and plastics, spare front and rear wheels, forks (rechroming needed though), & complete 4-1 exhaust, and loom, only really missing the swinging arm and seat for an almost complete bike.
