Decided to take a shake-down cruise in prep for Deals Gap. Went down the Natchez Trace from Nashville to Tishamingo State Park in Mississippi. The weather was spectacular and the Red Rocket ran like, well like a Honda. Not a single hicup.
The Trace itself was spectacular (there's that word again). I believe I was the only person on it. Actually I did pass quite a few bikes and eveyone was very friendly and waved. The speed limit is 50 mph and I was very comfy doing 60 and a bit more in the open areas. I have heard about the huge fines for speeding and only saw one Park Ranger and he was hanging out in the Lewis and Clark area. He actually waved to me.
Saw lots of turkeys but only a few deer. There are lots of really neat historical sites to stop at along the way. I wont attempt to give a history lesson here but the Trace is a significant part of US history. It runs about 440 miles from Nashville to Natchez Mississippi.
During the winter I bought an Airhawk seat and this was my first opportunity to give it  a good little test. It
proved itself worth every penny of the $90. I also got to try out my new Laminar Lip and it also solved all the problems I have had with turbulence/buffetting.
I got to Tishamingo in the late afternoon after about 200 miles of riding. I had left the house at about noon so I did ok time wise. I camped in the primitive area and had some freeze dried spagetti brought back to life with some boiling water from my pocket rocket stove. Oh, did I mention that I threw a couple beers in the
saddle bags? Slept like a baby and I am glad I took my medium weight sleeping bag because it actually got pretty chilly that night.
I had the bike packed up fairly heavy and it rode great. I got 53 mpg's over the 400 miles.
The Trace is not a twisty ride. It is more a mellow, smell the roses ride.
In any event I got to test out some of my new stuff that I will use again at Deals Gap.

Oh, the Roadrunner noticed my homemade rear shelf. I was wondering if anyone would comment on that. It is simply a piece of wood and I painted it black. It is attached by drilling a hole in the middle, putting a bolt thru the hole and attaching a bracket on the bottom which straddles the ribs on the Honda rack. Works great and I spiffed it up a little by adding shiny aluminum duck tape around the edge.

Cool!   thumb  I'm thinking about a removable shelf like yours to make it easier to hold larger (not necessarily heavier .. just larger) items..

Great report, Tom.  Thanks for sharing.  I've been wanting to do that ride for awhile.  Hopefully once the nighthawk gets put back together it will happen.

I almost forgot the obligatory food pic.........actually this spagetti is very good. It is vacuum packed and made for campers/hikers/backpackers.

Great report Tbante - your camping setup looks nice.

I really enjoyed riding the lower part of the Natchez Trace, and look forward to maybe riding the entire length some time later this year.

(sigh) so many rides, so little money....  giggle
