When I first got my bike, I had a DOT approved dirtbike helmet that I wore exactly once for a ride up in the mountains. you can see those bugs coming , and they always find a way to hit skin. Ordered a full face the next day and won't ride without it

Even with the full face, I got bugs inside my helmet (from underneath).

Better then eat'em. I use a shield, a friend prefers goggles. How about bumble bee?

I manage to get at least one or two of those in my eye from walking about during the warmer months, and I wear glasses.  Can't imagine how many I'd be digging out on a bike, assuming I didn't wreck first.

They taste terrible. How they get up under the helmet with a windshield, I don't know. But they sure are nasty and kinda gritty.

I was walking around the other day in 15G25 winds and a big grasshopper jumped up and hit me in the face. It STUNG. That would have done some serious damage at 55mph with no protection assuming it didn't cause a crash. (I told a friend who proceeded to laugh at me for 2 minutes because apparently it was funny then told me to ride with my visor down)

The faceplant though...sliding on my nose with 4 grit belt sander running wide open about 2 inches from my eyeballs. Time slows down when you hit the ground and I distinctly recall watching the gravel go by and calmly thinking "I'm so glad I'm inside here instead of out there."

Bugs hitting my face shield is just a small reason why I like full faced helmets.

Coming home from work the other day, I took a rock at 60 mph on the freeway. It hit right at eye level on my face shield. I'd hate to think what would've happened if I hadn't been wearing a FF.

When I was first stationed in Texas, I rode without a helemt for the first time.  A june bug (some sort of big beetle like thing) caught me in the forehead at about 40-45 mph.  Lesson learned.

Now, I have to clean my shield when I get to work and when I get home.  The two lane back roads pass thru the woods, and the 4 lane rural rout passes over a small river and several swamp areas.  The bugs are thick this time of year.  I have to clean and wax the front of the bike constantly to keep it clear as well.

windshield ...no more bugs on me .
good friend of mine hit a bird flying across the hwy it came swooping out of no where ...he had no windshield , left the bike at 60 mph off the back ...
he now has a windshield on his new bike .
he said he isn`t sure if it was the force in which the bird hit him or the shock of the hit .....eaither way ...he was lucky only cuts and bruises .
