Title: Don't wrap your pipes
Post by: Rubo on July 27, 2017, 06:15:45 AM
There seems to be hotted discussion on internet if wrapping pipes causes damage.Well it does. After 1 year of having my pipes wrapped foolishly I took it off to paint with high temp 2000 paint and sadly good chunks of my headers seriously rusted deep and rusted part has exactly same pattern as the wrap itself.
I will take pictures to show.If you ride a lot and occasionally in the rain that's when it really damages when wet wrap literally steams on the pipes.Whoever says otherwise must of never ridden in the rain.Anyway I will post pics soon

Tell your friend he will be buying headers way sooner if he wraps. This trend started in nascar racing but now most coat them with ceramic paint. If he is going for the looks then its simply costly.
Here some pics notice wrap pattern eaten deep.

The part has been sanded great deal prepping to paint which looks lot better but when 1st unwrapped it looked terrible.

Wow - Header Wraps - Another great slogan for "Bad Idea" Jeans...
No benefit and tremendous downside...  Hopefully header wrapping won't become a mandatory federal program...

Cool factor will ware off quick when you realize your $800 pipes are rusted prematurely
Paint it high temp ceramic paint that will look cool plus protect against rust.
my VHT pipes still look good after 2weeksw of painting.

As far as looks go, wrapped pipes are the motorcycle equivalent of legwarmers.

Did you notice any difference in heat after they were wrapped?

Sorry to hear that Rubo, I'd almost taken the plunge myself, before our fellow NHF members came to the rescue:

I'll be wrapping mine in a couple months and I'll keep people posted on the results. I have chrome V&H headers that I picked up for cheap due to surface rust anyways so I could care less if it makes them worse. It's a great test header

If I spent 800 on a header I would seriously consider contacting JetHot about their coating process. Great results, pipes coated inside AND out.

It's amazing how many riders won't ride in the rain. Deep sigh.

Alan,
I've met lots of folks who will ride in the rain if they have to, but never...
Wow !  Look !  It's RAINING... Let's go for a ride!
 haphap
With the right gear it's tolerable, but compared to a nice sunny day that's 70~ish...

In my case, it's also that rain = mud which "ain't no fun" with a 500 lb street bike..

BTW - In case it DOES rain, it's nice to have a good set of "wet" capable tires.
I really like the Avon Storms.. I've got the Storm 3D-XM's and they don't mind wet one bit.
