General Motorcycle Discussion / Re: Saw this for sale yesterday.

I did talk to the seller eventually. This guy wants $1600 for the bike. Aside from what you see in the pictures it also needs the gas tank redone, inside is all rusty. The intakes are dry rot as well as the rubbers to the airbox. There's even more wrong so I had to walk away. It's a shame really. It's just going to sit there and waste away.

Thanks for the info cheers3 I took another look (it's only a few miles away) I didn't get to talk to the owner/seller, but I gave it a closer look. It goes into first and second ok. Couldn't access the alternator or at least whatever I was pushing on would not give at all. But that is the throttle cable. It looks like the linkage froze up in the carb rack which resulted in someone breaking the cable and housing. I have a set of carbs all rebuilt that are spares for my 550 NH, it looks like I could interchange the bulk of these parts. Or am I reading part numbers wrong? Also the oil/dipstick smells like gas, could be stuck floats? Or giant red flag?

Looks like it needs some help, but it's not ridiculously trashed. What would be a good offer? $600-$700?

I think you need a bigger battery in there.

That is a great survivor right there! It's nice to see that there are still some in original form out there.

My boss (who is a bit loony) is an engine builder/tuner and he always recommends our customers use regular gas. His theory is, super/premium fuels, unless free of ethanol sit in the stations tanks longer because the higher price dictates less demand for them therefore there's more likely to be moisture in it and what have yous of older gas. Just wondering what you guys think.

I have to use the "Direct link" when using imgur. It also makes it easier if you click the little cursor arrow (far left above the smilies) that switches
the view.

Even though I paid basically $50 for it I was still appalled that someone would treat a bike so bad. The headlight and turn signals are all held onto a piece of threaded rod with what I think is Spongebob scotch tape whaaaat3
I think I should move over to the project area because this sure is going to take some work!
If anybody can identify that 4 into 1 exhaust I'm curious as it doesn't look like any that are available now.

Welcome to NHF.  Good luck with reviving the 550.  Your screen name made me think back to what a great album Aja was.

Thanks for the welcome. After diving a little deeper into this bike I think I need all the luck I can get. That album still holds up!

In Flickr, switch to the BBCode tags and paste those here.

Thanks for the tip!

Started pulling the carbs off and discovered that the wiring harness has been treated as poorly as the rest of the bike... Quite a shame someone did this to it, after reading a little bit about these 550's it sound like quite a remarkable little bike.

Picked this up in trade. It needs a couple things, maybe a cleaning. I'm picturing a trendy build as restoring her would mean replacing just about everything. It does have a good frame and the engine only has 9000 miles recorded.
Never posted here before, hopefully I can get the pics to work hmmmm2

edit; for now you will just have to take my word for it, I got a 83 550sc! I just can't get flickr to cooperate right now...
