Message a guy the other day about his NH. Offered him $600 less than asking.   He then mentions it does need a new battery and for $100 more he will replace it. Wha??  I dont, get this mentallity of selling a bike with a dead battery.

On the average, a motorcycle battery lasts 2 years.
If it didn't need a battery now, it probably would before spring. The NH bikes develop hard start syndrome long before the battery is toast. Buy your own battery (pick a good one) instead of the lowball junk sellers usually throw in before the sale and you will be money ahead. Buy a Battery Tender at the same time and your new quality battery may last 5 years...

I've had others wave at me when I have a fistful of throttle and clutch and can't reciprocate. I always feel like crap afterwards. However, there are many, many times when I will give the wave to a Harley rider (or riders; worse yet) and just get totally blown off. Must be my helmet and gear; "real bikers don't wear helmets" Or it could be that I'm either on a Japanese bike or a Buell, both appear to offend many Harley riders.

I was 'initiated' to what the wave was all about ("keep the rubber side down") about 10 years ago and have been doing it ever since. Harley riders are the worst. I have yet to have a sport bike rider not return a wave. I agree with the batwing comment; worst offenders!
Nicest comment I got on the NH was pulling up next to a grungy, hairy 'thing' on an ironhead Sportster; he looked over at my S and shouts "BITCHIN' vintage bike, dude!"
I was stunned.

It's a delicate balance...especially in the spring when the roads are still full of salt, sand and gravel. I agree it's better to concentrate on your apexing than what's right in front of you.

Here in blighty we get more of this. Bad and ignorant styles on the roads have escalated to a point that aggressive behaviour is rife. Our government has cut back too much on traffic cops,  relying on the good will of the people.... There isn't any. I discussed this in a meeting with the road safety team. U was told not enough money for cops.  I said the police are not doing the job they're paid for and they're welcome to come out for a drive with me after the meeting.....I could make a cops wage in one hour if they got out of their car ( then 39 hours pure profit) and enforced the law with fines....guess what? They refused. Excuse??
That's pretty sad, but of course if you tried to take any action yourself, I'm sure they would be right there to arrest you.
Myself, I wouldn't ride in a big city anymore.

I ride because I like it; I consider it "fun".
City riding is not fun. Ergo...

Pretty good post. I've done this several times over the years in my VFR and seen ZERO difference. BUT ... Just for gits and shiggles I'll try it next fill up in the Nighthawk and let you know.
I'm assuming your Viffer is EFI?

Welcome to the forum, and to riding and owning a Nighthawk! You chose one of the best bikes possible, very little maintenance, plenty of parts availability, handles well and enough power to get the job done with ease, yet not overdo it.

To carry this a step further, for the remainder of the season I will begin burning 97 octane premium in my NH to see if there are any changes. FWIW I ave not tried running that fuel in my 700S as of yet, only the avgas.
Unfortunately, mileage won't be on my agenda because I don't always ride the same road, and sometimes can't control my exuberant wrist which would throw the mileage thing out the window anyway. But I will pay close attention to warm-up and idle speed, anyway...

I am fully inclined to agree that it could be the additives making the difference. We all know octane rating is adding additives to increase the anti-knock rating; that's the only reason they used to add tetraethyl lead, and nowadays who knows what to raise that rating? My personal experiences revolved around having a source of 100 octane avgas (which contains 4X the TEL of leaded premium mogas) and the difference in warm up, idle speed when warmed up, and felt perception of acceleration were quite noticeable and apparent, especially when on a long ride where I had to tank up mid-ride with 87 unleaded. I realize this is a moot point because most of you (and now myself) no longer have that access to avgas, but I am simply making the comparison between two halves of the same ride, and they WERE different...to the point where I had to keep revving at stop lights to keep it from stumbling.
Since switching back to 87, I've had to adjust the idle speed up, and it bogs the first mile or so running through the gears until temps start to come up.
So, I'm not questioning the science, but rather, stating there is more to the issue than meets the eye. Could it be ethanol or additives? Quite possibly. But there is a difference.

That is it, and it's not debatable.
How can you make a blanket statement like this when others have already posted their experiences which indicate improved fuel economy, faster warm up, increased idle speed and other improvements, real or perceived? Those improvements may or may not be worth the effort or extra money spent, but to dismiss them as "not debatable" is being closed-minded IMHO.

Higher octane fuel could conceivably burn at a different rate. Assuming (hypothetically) that it burns slower, that MIGHT improve idle and low-end torque. Whether there actually is a measurable difference, i have no idea.

On the dyno...can't say for sure. On the 'butt-dyno'...definitely! og2

Octane rating DOES have an effect on idle, anti-knock and performance. I used to have a practically unlimited source for obtaining 100 Low Lead Avgas and used to run it in the Nighthawk. Since switching back to 87 octane, the difference is quite noticeable...to the point where I am considering running premium in the Hawk regardless of cost.

The mileage on my 700S is, well...I top off on every ride and fill it when I'm showing 1/4 tank if it's a longer ride. And I haven't run out yet.

That Viffer is (was) sweet! I have an 'inception year' (1983) VF750F Interceptor with 6k on the clock as a project bike, but it's pretty much stalled on the back burner. Work has been too hectic and unpredictable since my job change 3 years ago. But I know it's always there. nice1
