Sweet looking bike - Congrats!

I replaced my first clutch cable today!

Last Friday, I got home at a decent hour - and was looking forward to getting in a short ride with my wife before dinner time. I pulled out the Nighthawk to let it warm up, pulled out the CMX500 & got geared up. I made it to the corner, then had my cable let go when I shifted up to third gear. So I limped it home, and called up the dealer to inquire as to the availability of a replacement. Honda still had it, but the dealer needed to order it, leaving me short a motorcycle for a few days at least. Totally FUBARed my weekend plans.

So late yesterday, I got the call that my part had arrived... Battling work traffic, I got down to the dealer before they closed, and ended up shooting the breeze with the sales guys & one of the regular guys until well after dark. So - I didn't actually get to the task at hand until this afternoon. After watching a couple of youtube videos, and armed with the appropriate wrenches, I figured I'd give it a go. It was literally one of the easiest mechanical operations I've ever done. I installed it, eyeballed the adjustment, tested basic function - then  rode it around the yard. I then shut it down, made a quick adjustment, retested it... Probably a 15 minute job. I then got the rest of my gear on, and went for a nice ride through the countryside. So much better! I didn't even realize how stretched out the old cable was before it gave up the ghost. It shifts like a brand new bike now!

I'm new on here... and a new owner of a Nighthawk as well. I'm a motorcycle rookie, but I try to contribute whatever knowledge I can impart.

Thanks for the tip! Can you link to a pic of the finished exhaust? If I ever "streetfighter" my 'hawk, I think this would be better than the dang wrap that everyone is doing these days...

Actually, I opened the source code for the Flickr page and found the image's direct URL.

That's what I had to do on the post I just put in the "Stablemates" forum. The BB code wasn't working for me for some reason.

Stablemates / I've got a thing for twins...

Besides the little 'Hawk - I've also got a new CMX500 Rebel. If you haven't sat on one yet - check them out. The 300 & 500 are different only in the engine - the 300 being around 45 pounds lighter. These are a completely different animal than the "tiny chopper" aesthetic of the CMX250. My wife & I are both new riders, and with her being 5' 2", keeping seats low is a big factor in our bike shopping. We both were impressed with the new Rebels. The only thing (IMHO) that could be improved on is the suspension is super soft. The preload on the rear can be ramped up, maybe I'll take it from the "2" setting & try 3 or 4.

Re-Animating this thread a little... Two bikes in the stable... Both Honda twins. Brand new CMX500 Rebel, and a new-to-me 1997 CB250 Nighthawk. I'd like to get a couple of project bikes, but currently don't have room.

Thanks Larry!

I don't know what's acting squirrely on my PC... Maybe some goofy Windows10 setting that I'm missing. The PO had the tank smoothed & re-painted, so I'm debating whether to put the correct Honda "wing" on it, some "old school" tattoo themed art (Aces, Lucky 13's, etc), or just leave it smooth. We already added it to the insurance & got the plate & sticker for it, so now I just need to get out there & ride it.

That is, if I can keep it away from the wife... I think she likes it more then the brand new CMX500 we have, thanks to its super-light weight & the "gentleness" of the power delivery on roll-on. The 500 still intimidates her a little when she inadvertently blips the throttle. She keeps hopping on the Nighthawk when I'm not looking & driving around the property.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

https://flic.kr/p/YTo6xr is the link I was trying to use to attach the hosted picture... I get the pop-up box for the advanced editor, paste the link, but it's not attaching it in the field below (at least that I can see...) I suppose I'll try playing with it tomorrow...

Your Honda Nighthawk / New bike - first post!

Howdy Folks,
Newbie here, both to the forum & motorcycling in general... The wife & I took the MSF class a couple of months ago, then went & bought a new motorcycle (2017 Honda CMX500), that we've both been practicing on - just tooling around the neighborhood. For the last month or so, I hunted high & low for an older bike to ride around the backroads on - I looked at ads for everything from Honda Rebel 250's, Yamaha XJ400's & 650/750's, Suzuki Savages & S40's to vintage CB's. Well - I'm happy to say that after looking high & low, as of 2 days ago I'm the proud owner of another Honda twin - a 1997 Nighthawk 250. It's got 2185 miles on the odometer, although the fellow I purchased it from wasn't the original owner, so he couldn't verify if that is in fact accurate. I've got to say - these Wee-hawks are just fun little bikes.

Edit - still trying to figure out the photo features...  ridn2
