I thought I had enough rubber left when we took our trip out to Colorado.  We got caught over Monarch Pass on the last day and it turns out I did not.   It poured and while the rubber I had was doing fine with dry roads, it was not fine on wet ones.  New tires went on as soon as I got home.  I've learned my lesson and probably change tires too often now.

I never said the truck driver was innocent.   Chris's actions resulted in one of two outcomes. 

1) The truck driver notices his truck filled with water, but has no idea who did it.  It accomplishes nothing. 

or

2) The truck driver connects the dots, which only reinforces his negative opinion of motorcycles.  That just leads to more incidents of road rage against us.

As for the incident in California, that rider picked a fight he could not and should not win.  It's a amazing and a shame that he got away.  The only innocent person involved was the lady driving the SUV that flipped over.

Revenge is human nature.  I understand why Chris would want to do such a thing, but it didn't do the rest of us any favors.
 The same is true for the rider that kicked that car in California.  "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind."

Well, of course FIDO works, but it lacks the satisfaction of a dish, best served cold.
The best "course" I've ever heard of is the solution delivered by Chris, a good friend of mine.
Not only did the "Road Bozo" tailgate his bike, but he made several attempts at bumping him off the road, which required Chris to take evasive action.
Chris slowed down and let Mr. Bozo run on ahead, but he followed him discretely.
The Bozo likely had forgotten what a frikin' sphincter he had been and drove on home.
Chris noted the location.
MUCH later on that night, he returned, and decided that Bozo's car needed a good washing, so he put Bozo's garden hose in the cracked open window of the passenger side of the car and turned the hose valve on full.
This particular form of reprisal lacks the immediate feedback of more aggressive vandalism, but provides one's imagination with a stunning image of hundreds of gallons of fresh, pure water knocking the crap out of a guy who deserves worse when he prepared his foray the next morning.

Wow, that is incredibly stupid advice.  If your story is true, your friend Chris is a despicable human being not worthy of this earth.

FIDO is the only course of action.  Get away from that vehicle however you have to and try to learn from the situation.

I plan to scrambler style it out anyway and keep it for a few years. Depending how it turns out maybe longer, but by that time at least have a second bike

The CBs have been around a long time.  In 82, they went with a model name rather than a designation.  I imagine because everyone else was doing it. 

I would seriously reconsider your plan to make a scrambler out of it.  Over the years on this forum, I've seen many attempts to make scramblers, bobbers, etc. The thing is 99.9% of them turn out like crap, run worse, and then you have the owner trying to sell it for 3x what they paid because of all the custom work. 

If you're going to do it anyway, plan on getting $0 for your return.  When you "make it your own", that means nobody else wants it.

I think they goal on the 90's 750's were to cut costs.  The loss of shaft drive, fuel gauge, turn signal indicators, etc. 

The real question is how long do you think you'll have this bike?  It it's your first bike, it really doesn't matter.   There's a good chance you'll want to upgrade a few years down the road.

I'm talking about actual cruise control.  The reason I like actual cruise control over a throttle lock is that it is easy to set and easy to disengage.  It's just a button to push to set, but I also have to think about unlocking the throttle it in a sudden stop.  Mine disengages with a tap of either brake or the clutch.

You need cruise control.  Once you have it, you'll never want a bike without it.  It greatly increase the stamina for longer rides.

I'm on my second bike since owning my first Nighthawk and I am still around.  Don't think you have to leave the forum just because you are no longer a Nighthawk owner.

Heck, even our admins don't own any Nighthawks.  Technically Hondo owns a CB1000, but that bike will never see the light of day.

For some, the Nighthawk suits their needs.  For many, it is a stepping stone to their next bike.  I loved my Nighthawk when I had it, but I'll never go back.  However, this forum is not just about the Nighthawk.  You're looking a community that supports riding in general.  Ride reports, meet-ups,  reviews, etc.  All things that don't have to be Nighthawk specific. 

Enjoy the new bike, good luck with the sale, but stick around.

Interesting. I've never ridden an FJR or any of today's now popular ADV bikes...but everything about them appeals to me, as a potential second bike, down the road.

Kidding aside, I'm guessing a lot of it comes down to the size of the rider and not wanting to ride something that big around town?.  For me, a second bike of any kind would collect dust next to the FJR.  Anything sportier or smaller doesn't fit me (not sure how I managed on the Nightahwk) and there's no reason to go with a touring bike. 


An adventure bike would be an exception I think, because it has a different purpose all around.  If I was into that, I might consider a second bike.  But my rubber stays on the pavement as much as possible.  Even with an adventure bike, I wouldn't take it unless I was going off road.

Canada got the 750S, while the US got the 700S.  They are the same bike essentially, except one is bored out a little more. .  The only reason being the Harley tariff being for bikes 750cc and over.  Canada wasn't affected.  To the best of my knowledge, there was a 750SC Nighthawk in 82 and then 91-2003.  The 750S had the most unique look to it. 

Is this in the classifieds or something?  It's possible they are just labeled without the S.

I owned both bikes.  In my opinion, Honda really cheapened the 750 with regards to features.  It is pretty much featureless, but it is a solid bike that will serve you well.  The 650 has more features with shaft drive, better instrumentation, and a 6th gear.  Age should be a factor though and the performance of my 650 was definitely not on par with the 750.  But you're talking about bikes 17 years difference in age. 

A lot can depend on your size.  I'm 6'4 and 270 lbs.  The 750 fit me much better and made me wonder how I ever rode the 650.  (I think that now about the 750 after moving to the FJR)

You won't miss what you never had.  If you have the 250 NH, go with the 750 NH.

My first ride after MSF was my dad's 1500 Goldwing.  I rode that until I got my first bike.  Price was the driving factor in going with the 650 Nighthawk.  I figured I would lay it down at some point (and I did), but it was still a bike that I liked the looks of and had enough power for me.  Plus I wanted to have money for gear.  I'm glad I didn't go with anything less than that actually.  Then again, I have a little more mass than many people.

If money was no object, I'm not sure what I would have bought back then.

Sell it to him.  It's his choice, not yours.  If you don't sell it to him, the next seller will.  People start out on Ninja 650's all the time because they are an inexpensive bike and tons of them are out there.

You can be stupid on any type of bike.  I know your bike has torque.  I've seen it.  But his mentality is what is going to determine his level of safety, not his bike.  The kid will likely be a squid, blowing his entire budget on a bike with no regards to gear. 

Voice your concerns if it makes you feel better, but I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over it.

In Michigan, the public courses are $25 for BRC.  You can't beat that deal and it gives you credit for your road test.  All you have to do is go pass your 10 question written test. 

Private courses are around $350.  I've not heard of any subsidization for the advanced courses though.

To me, the FJR is a superior machine in all aspects.  I loved the Nighthawk, but it would have 2 inches of dust on it if I kept it along with the FJR.  Bike looks good, but the blue one is much faster.

Pretty much anyone that wants to customize a Nighthawk sucks at it.  They aren't expensive bikes to begin with and so people that want to "make it their own" aren't willing to put much money into it.  Then they think they can sell their garbage for twice the money because of all of their custom work.  Custom work usually means the bike lost a fight with a reciprocating saw, they can't get it running right, and think someone else wants a bike that can't be ridden. 

You won't find much love for modified Nighthawks here.  Most of the members like to ride their bike, rather than modify it.

It's a great bike and will serve you well.  Don't mess with that.
