My R/R was giving over 15v so I bought a new used R/R off ebay and now my voltage looks normal again.  My butt dyno even said she was more peppy today.

Check the tyre pressure, changed the oil including a new oil filter, replaced a broken fork reflector, dropped the exhaust and gave the headers a new coat of ceramic paint, and gave it a top to bottom clean and silicone polish.  Ooooh, shiny!
All this on top of replacing the fork seals and adding some extra foam to the seat, which I did last week.  I think the only maintenance left to do is change the battery in the clock and then I'm good to go for the Ramapo 500.

New forum member here.

Must it be today? My most recent major upgrade is an electronic cruise control. I already had a NEP throttle clamp, but this is SO much better, especially after getting the DIP switch settings dialed in.

I also added a switched combination power-outlet/twin-USB-port doohickey to supply my GPS, TPMS, and cell phone, the latter of works very well with my Cardo Scala Rider Multi-set helmet set-up.

I also have a Vetter Windjammer V and K&G Engineering saddlebags and trunk (all from the early '80s) on my Nighthawk. Wiring and electronics are my "thing" in case anyone has any questions.

Nice! I'd gone through the same thing, only I'd ordered mine from MotoSport, who shipped free (without me having to order additional Partzilla items to qualify). Regardless, pretty easy install and super handy to have. I use mine constantly now. Enjoy!

Spring puller is a must. I don't remember, but I was struggling trying to put it on either down or up and it was awful. As soon as I moved the stand to the other position it went right on. I feel like maybe I put it up on the stand and it went right on.

Is this thread limited to what you did "to" your bike..
Might it include what you did "with" your bike?
If the latter is acceptable, then I took her (all mechanical things are female, according to those that KNOW) for a ride.
If I have to go with what I did "to" her... I finished installing a new set of Avon Storm 3D X-M tires.
I had to go with a 150/70 17 in the rear as that's the smallest width, but it fits well, looks good and seems more stable at speed.

I like the extra meat back there as part of my drive is on 3 miles of gravel roads.  The Avons gave me no trouble in the dirt.
On pavement, they stick like Super-Bike glue.  For Sport Touring tires they feel more like the former, especially for a tire that could last 10-15K (X-M = extended mileage)

Keep the rubber on the bottom folks!

Today I added new BikeMaster led turn signals and a new battery. These signals are metal and seem durable. This was a small project for me and my 11year old son.The led turn signals are not working. I can't figure that one out yet. I work midnights so its my bed time. My new mirrors will be here tommorow. I will post pics when I get them on. They are the BikeMaster Old School mirrors in black. So as of now, I'm a lil behind on this thread. Hopefully more people post up on here. IMO, its dead.

If you're switching to LED turn signals, you have to change your flasher unit as well.  The old thermal unit doesn't work with the low resistance of LEDs.
For the fronts, you need to hook them up with diodes so that you retain the running lights.  There are some good instructions at http://www.hondashadow.net/forum/72-technical-discussion/116607-3-wire-oem-2-led-how-keep-your-running-light-blinker-combo.html
Note that you don't have to worry about the diodes for the dashboard light if you have separate lights for left and right -- the diode is only needed if there is a single light there.

The old thermal unit doesn't work with the low resistance of LEDs.

Technically speaking, it's because of the low current caused by the high impedance of LEDs (as compared to incandescent bulbs of equal brightness).

Cleaned the engine and frame with new Shout method. Worked really well, but not perfect. But the little bits left were easy. Then cleans adjusted and lubed the chain, and drained the snot tube. Conditioned the leather seat. Couldn't find anything else the old girl needed

How do you like the Corbin seat? There was one for sale in Ohio, but the add disappeared on C/L. He advertised it as being BIG in the saddle and for a bigger person.  I messaged him and he never got back with me, I'm not a bigger guy, just wanted the seat..oh well

I started out with the  LEDs that you see in the first pic. They are from Bikemaster as well. They looked good, but I just couldn't get them right. So I opted for the ones pictured. They are much better installing. It's basicly plug and play, as well as the mirrors.  My rear signals will be here today and I will take some after pics.

I can identify with that. I just ride mine all the time, but I never wash it. It looks terrible. I'd wash it more often, but the place I park it at work that is very safe makes it very dirty from wind born dust and dirt.

I inherited my 700sc. My best friend left it to me when he passed away. It's an absolute minter( wish I could show you pictures if her.)  several times a year, Staffordshire bikers collect for charity and thousands of us block the streets collecting stuff( pet food/ toys/ easter eggs...that sort of stuff. We have two runs left till winter breaks in..  I am stripping her for rebuild. In his effects I found many things..today I found a box with tracker system, alarm, immobiliser, other stuff he bought and didn't get chance to fit. It's been nearly two years since I was left all this stuff and only now can go through it. My missus is helping with the wiring even though she hates bikes. I am going tomorrow for a meet to raise for pets in need( 21St century Britain and we have food banks....it's a disgrace to Western world) I know there will be couple thousand bikes but will never sell/swap my nighthawk for any of them. Have fun all and keep riding

So, my YELLOW '96 is named.... Amber... and Amber wasn't feeling too pretty after riding home in the mud when we were surprised by a monsoon storm..
It's strange how when the Weather Service says there is a 10% chance, it rains, and with an 80% chance, it doesn't.. But I digress...

So Amber was a muddy mess and I gave her a bath and did a WD40 clean on her x-ring chain followed up with her favorite silicone lube.
Protects from corrosion and doesn't attract dirt like chain wax...  After 700 miles the tension adjustment was still perfect...

I also discovered that the boot that protects the wires going into the left side rotor cover was a bit loose, so I added a bit of waterproof grease to seal the rubber connector in case rain decides to intrude.

Years ago I bought a cleanable stock size Uni Air Filter, and it doesn't take too many trips down my dirt road to clog, so I did Amber a favor and cleaned that for her as well.  She does need to breathe after all..

Now she's "lookin' good and feelin' good"...
nice1

Finally got the nuts, bolts, and washers to mount my rear cowl.  So tonight I took the time to get it all bolted down and popped on the side panels.  The right side is missing the top boss so it's a little floppy there.  Planning on gluing on a metal ball post to fix that, found the idea in a very good thread on this forum!  Not digging the red and black, but couldn't find red panels when I was originally looking.  I plan on painting the panels, tank and fender(front, not sure I'll paint the rear fender) a deep metallic blue over the winter.  Possibly going to add a couple white speed stripes on the tank, we shall see.

How does it sound with those short pipes?

I think it sounds alright. I have nothing to compare it to though since they were like that when I bought it. I would like a deeper throatier sound but it doesn’t seem like there are many options for an added muffler.  I would guess that they are a bit louder than stock at the moment.

I prefer a lower frequency sound myself. Doesn't need to be loud..

No it doesn't "need" to be loud.  I do like something louder than stock by quite a bit thought.  I like to hear my bike in traffic, at least a little.  Part of the excitement of riding for me is hearing a motorcycle and.....surprise surprise I'm the rider!  ;-)

So  yesterday I took off the wheels in preparation for new tires which are coming later this week.  After reading the dates and finding the rear at 10 years old and the front at a whopping 22 years old I sadly but smartly decided to put the bike up until it gets fresh feet.  Taking the wheels off was more in prevention than preparation I think.  Keeps me from heading out for a "little" ride.
I'm also going to change the brake pads front and rear soon, thought I'd do that while the wheels are off and waiting for fresh feet.  Then I haven't had success finding brake pads.  I haven't done much searching yet but was frustrated to see that my usual sources for parts doesn't have them.    Any links to some decent pads would be appreciated.  1991 cb750

New tires showed up FAST!  Just dropped them off to be mounted and balanced.  Also was able to order new front and rear brakes at the same shop.  Going to pick it all up in a couple days!!!  So excited to find out what fresh feet on my hawk will feel like!

Well that was a productive day. reinstalled the wheels with the new tires!!  Changed the pads up front the the shoes in back.  Cleaned everything reasonably while I was at it.  Learning about these things as I go.  Adjusted the chain once I had everything back on.  Then...........Took it out for a short ride in the wet.  I have to say, even I could feel the difference with the new tires!  The bike felt so much sportier and easy to maneuver.  Granted I'm new and wasn't going very fast, especially in the corners, but wow there's a difference.  Looking forward to being back on the road!

Old drum shoes.  Had plenty of surface left but since I bought new already I changed them out.

Mulegandy - You can clean and polish those pipes up good as brand spanking new.  It will take some elbow grease, but I've done it with a parts bike I bougtht years ago.  I don't have the "before/after" pics anymore, but trust me when I say they were in MUCH worst shape than yours.  This is the product that I used:

https://www.amazon.com/Glass-Restoration-Specialist-Blue-Job-Polish/dp/B001MQ01PK?SubscriptionId=AKIAIKBZ7IH7LXTW3ARA&&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B001MQ01PK&tag=wwwbookcompar-20&ascsubtag=5a085e0a5b9d950ccc49fee6

I recently joined Smug Mug, as I refuse to be held hostage for the Photobucket extortion.  I realize that S/M can do the same thing, and if so, then I'm done with photohosting.  Anyhoo, I was looking through my old pictures, seeing what I might re-post.  I found some great pictures of my old nighthawks, and it got me thinking about this thread:

1.  My "hybrid" 700s.  This was an '84 nighthawk with '86 RWB plastics.  I really liked this combo because it had the chrome/polished motor accents, and the RWB plastics - best of both worlds to me.  This bike came with an after market chin fairing and a mac header.  I absolutely LOVED this bike and still regret selling it to my neighbor, who in turn sold it to someone else and I lost track of it.

2.  I bought this '96 750 from another NHF forum member who lived somewhere in Georgia.  We met halfway in Montgomery Alabama and I trucked it back home.  I rode this bike almost 25,000 miles in about 18 months.

After that, I bought my first FJR and started touring more extensively.  While you can take Pants out of the nighthawk, but you can't take the Nighthawk out of Pants.

Stay Thirsty, my friends....

I replaced my first clutch cable today!

Last Friday, I got home at a decent hour - and was looking forward to getting in a short ride with my wife before dinner time. I pulled out the Nighthawk to let it warm up, pulled out the CMX500 & got geared up. I made it to the corner, then had my cable let go when I shifted up to third gear. So I limped it home, and called up the dealer to inquire as to the availability of a replacement. Honda still had it, but the dealer needed to order it, leaving me short a motorcycle for a few days at least. Totally FUBARed my weekend plans.

So late yesterday, I got the call that my part had arrived... Battling work traffic, I got down to the dealer before they closed, and ended up shooting the breeze with the sales guys & one of the regular guys until well after dark. So - I didn't actually get to the task at hand until this afternoon. After watching a couple of youtube videos, and armed with the appropriate wrenches, I figured I'd give it a go. It was literally one of the easiest mechanical operations I've ever done. I installed it, eyeballed the adjustment, tested basic function - then  rode it around the yard. I then shut it down, made a quick adjustment, retested it... Probably a 15 minute job. I then got the rest of my gear on, and went for a nice ride through the countryside. So much better! I didn't even realize how stretched out the old cable was before it gave up the ghost. It shifts like a brand new bike now!

I rode mine to a Thanksgiving dinner at a fellow motorcyclist's home.  It was an invigorating (read: chilly) ride, but still worth winter-dressing for.  After tonight's 28-degree low, the next two weeks should be in the 50's and 60's during the day, so no winterizing for me . . . yet.

Today, I'm replacing my air filter and the rubber pad on my fuel tank.  I discovered the pad was split when I changed the plugs/wires a couple weeks ago.  Also picked up 112 main jets (to de-CA the way-too-lean fuel system) and some carb rebuild kits, but that'll be a project for when it's too cold to ride (I'm in NorCal, so that's like January/February).

Boo Hiss.  Attempted changing my sprockets and chain.  Failed to accomplish much of anything.  Got the front sprocket off.  Tried to take the chain apart, broke the chain tool!  Bah.  If motorcycles were made of wood I'd have had this done in no time flat.  Hopefully I'll get some useful tips tomorrow at the bike shop and from my mechanic buddy and I'll be able to get it done tomorrow.  Planning on doing a toy run Sat, IF I can get things taken care of that is!  Wish me luck!!!!

Well, I managed to get it done yesterday morning before the Toy Run.  Got up early and used a grinder I borrowed from a friend.  Off with the old chain and on with the new.  I spread the old chain out on my bench and marked where it was.  Then counted links on the new chain to the same 110 and marked where it was.  The old chain is about 5/8" longer than the new chain.  So new chain made and installed.  New Sprockets on and everything back together.  A few test runs around the block, adjust the shift lever and rear brake a bit and off to the toy run.

The Toy Run was pretty fun.  I was in one last weekend with my girlfriend in Polk County (south?) Carolina.  There were over 500 motorcycles there.  It was dry and near 60 degrees.  This time it was just me in Portland, Oregon.  I don't know the count of bikes but by the looks of it maybe in the 200 range, maybe.  It was in the 40's and raining.  Fun ride though.  The "rain gear" I was gifted a month or so back appears to be better suited as a cloudy day pant and jacket!  I was Absolutely drenched, and I've applied two coats of water repellent!!!  Also my new pair of gloves which are supposed to be water proof are NOT.  Boo Hiss on all that.  I've written to the company about that.  We shall see what they say.  The other gear I'll make do with some frog toggs I have for hiking(used today in the wind and they block all of that very well) and a jacket I used for backpacking/snowsports. It is waterproof.  I think in the future I will invest in some nice rain gear or maybe a duster or leather winter gear.  There were a lot of leather wearing bikers there at both toy runs.  The wet weather didn't seem to touch the leather or duster wearing riders.

I installed clear turn signal lenses on my 86 RWB Nighthawk S.  I also installed chrome amber bulbs so the turn signals don't have the egg yolk look.  I'm very pleased with how it looks.  In my opinion, the clear lenses go better with the color scheme of the bike.

While my current chain has the hollow-pin type master link, in 44 years of riding, I have never had a single issue with a clip-type master link. Not one. As long as the clip is properly seated on the pins, there should be no real difference. Carry a spare master link just in case.

Thought I'd ride to work today. I charged the battery on the 700S the other day so I figured it would be good to go. Sure, the starter turned just fine and the engine fired up, but the solenoid got stuck so the starter wouldn't shut off even after I killed the ignition and took the key out. Knocking on the solenoid didn't make it stop so I had to just let it run down the battery.
Rode the NC instead.

I would have pulled a fuse (main or (on the NH750 at least) headlight) and saved the battery.  Deep discharge is not good for wet-cell batteries, as well as most other types.

It was cold, and the starter is a heavy drain so it only took about 8-10 seconds to reach the point where it wasn't turning over any more.  I wasn't even able to get the side cover off before it was done.

Cleaned and lubed tire chain and checked it, but as usual, no need for adjustment.
Oil still clean and right where it should be...

Hmmm... Time for a ride!

Earlier this week I installed a fairing I've had since the fall.  I struggled to attach it the first time I tried to attach it back in the fall.  The instructions were very limited.  I decided to youtube it and found a greatly helpful video by the maker.  Got it on and headed out to get gas at midnight just cause I was really excited to see the difference.  All but one thing is great.  That one thing is a big deal to me on short rides(up to 20 minutes. i.e. most commutes).  This is just the right shape and size that it pushes almost all of the air it diverts RIGHT PAST MY EARS!!!!  So now with ANY ride I have to use earplugs or ear buds.  Yes I know(meaning no need to let me know that ear protection is a super good idea, thanks for the concern) that ear protection is a good idea, I have in fact already purchased several types of plugs trying them out to see what fits, feels good long term and is effective to the level I feel needed.  Is I am a new rider this is a new experience for me.  I'm guessing that I could change shapes and or sizes of fairings to put my head more into the air bubble instead of right between the air stream created by this fairing?  What size have any of you used that puts the air well away from your ears?  I'm not sure how it is referred to other than measured from the top of the headlight.  I believe mine is about 15".   I did just see a different style that only uses two attachment points on the handle bars as apposed to the four that mine uses(two handle bar and two fork).  Seems easier to attach and detach, and it comes in a couple different sizes.  I'm thinking of trying one to see if it's better than what I have on now.  I do know that it's so much nicer at speed now. I don't have to bolster myself against the buffeting of the wind!

And today I took a ride after church in the break in the rain we had today out to a local dam on the Mighty Columbia.  Man I like to ride!

Is there any adjustment to the angle of the windshield? You might be able to change the wind stream enough to displace the air past your ears.

Not really. The cables from the controls pretty much decide where it will be. I’ve tried sitting closer, further higher and lower. The only position that helps is tucking my head right down into the fairing right above the handlebars. I’m wondering also if I could get a small extension to force the wind up and out wider.  I have seen a photo of an addition clipped onto a normal fairing.

Going for a new battery. PO thought there was a charging system problem, so he sold the bike relatively cheap. Turns out it is just a bad battery. 1993 750NH

When my battery went south I switched to an AGM.
Zero maintenance, no vent tube, and it's still performs like new after almost 12 years.
I leave it on a battery tender junior when parked.

I sprayed a full 4/1 system I bought for 30 quid( minus tenner for shotblasting) while I was at it, I fitted new original rear indicators and cleaned the whole plastics on the back end. I love this 80's bike. Wish I could show pictures of her ( black Betty.....every bike has to have a name......)

Still working the pipe issue, and looking for a centerstand. Hoping to get a stock pipe in trade for the V&H. Still working on running a tank of gas thru it dosed with Lucas cleaner. If I can't get the stumble out of it, will do the washer mod. Thinking of raising the bars a bit, too., and getting some kind of windshield, too. It as a set of small bags. A very nice Triumph Trophy 1200 I was going to look at tomorrow was sold.

You're more likely to get clean idle and low-RPM performance by cleaning the pilot jets, in my opinion.

A few weeks ago I bondoed a few dents and dings in my gas tank.  Tonight I started plasti dipping!  One panel at a time.

Interesting effect.  I like plastidip, fairly easy to use and you ca change it if it doesn't come out right.

I live in England, weather is Islamic..( sunny or 0000e)  I have my 700 sc in the garage. Today I put new plugs in, changed the oil/ filter. Made an air filter from a BMW air filter( believe it or not, an air filter here is £35.00)  I polished the tank and replaced the fuel line(  £7.00 for original or £3.00 for a mere length of pipe with two spare clips).  Tomorrow I'm fitting the tank back on, then new fuel and restart..  I have  a spare 4/1 stainless system I'm thinking of fitting as the old original pipes have rusted at the balancer pipe.  I love this 80's machine. All bolt on/ bolt off kit.

Finished the plasti dipping.  Got everything back on Friday and have been enjoying the new color! Could have done a bit better on the finish, especially on the top of the tank.  I think I went a bit light on the last few coats so it didn't blend together.  But it's my first plasti dipping and I was just trying it out.  Now to see how tough it is and how long it will last.

I brushed the snow off and gave it a hug!
Tomorrow will be warm!  I may fire it up!
